Job description
The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (ULLS) has an opening for a Visiting Lecturer Data Scientist. This is a full‑time, 12‑month faculty appointment that can be renewed annually for up to three years. The position reports to the University Libraries’ Director of Learning, Research, and Engagement. Early‑career candidates and members of minoritized or marginalized groups are especially encouraged to apply. The desired start date is September 1, 2026.
As a member of the Learning, Research, and Engagement (LRE) unit’s Graduate and Faculty Engagement team, the Visiting Lecturer Data Scientist will provide coordinated, full‑lifecycle research data support to students, staff, and faculty researchers across all main‑campus disciplines at UNM. Services include consultation and instruction in leading practices in data acquisition, processing, analysis, visualization, and documentation. The role also supports data management planning and facilitates compliance with funding mandates. The Lecturer will develop and maintain productive relationships within the College, across the University, and within the global research data community. Collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Center for Advanced Research Computing, and the UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center is expected. The Lecturer will receive training to become a badged Carpentries instructor through the College’s Carpentries membership and will promote open science by delivering Software, Data, and Library Carpentry workshops.
The successful candidate will engage the broader campus community with empathy, curiosity, and a strong service orientation. Frequent collaboration with colleagues across campus will provide opportunities for professional growth and development within a diverse community of researchers throughout the University and New Mexico. Candidates need not meet every preferred qualification; individuals who meet the minimum qualification and are interested in developing further in data science are encouraged to apply.
Primary Duties

- Build strategic partnerships within the University and beyond to foster interdisciplinary research and innovation
- Participate as an active member of the LRE Graduate and Faculty Engagement
- Support the collaborative development and implementation of Graduate and Faculty Engagement programs, including reference consultations and library instruction
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited Library/Information Science program or equivalent, or an earned PhD in a field engaged with data science
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting researchers and campus stakeholders in leading practices in lifecycle data management, including planning, data collection, quality assurance, analysis, visualization, and scientific communication

- Proficiency with Python, R, Git, or other open source languages and platforms
- Knowledge of leading practices in FAIR data sharing
- Knowledge of frameworks for ethical data practice (i.e., CARE), including principles of tribal data sovereignty
- Knowledge of general purpose and specialized data repositories
- Demonstrates flexibility across interdisciplinary data and analysis types

- Spoken or written proficiency in Spanish or an Indigenous language of the greater Southwest
- Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities
