Education/Certification: 
Required: 

• Bachelor's Degree
• Master's Degree in Music Therapy
• Board certification (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists

Experience: 

• Demonstrated experience providing music therapy services to children or adolescents, preferably in a school or educational setting
• Experience of working with students with disabilities (e.g., Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional/Behavioral Needs, Multiple Disabilities)
• Experience developing and implementing individualized plans aligned with IEP goals
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. (e.g. Special Education Teachers, Speech Therapists, occupational therapists, administrators)
• Experience documenting services and maintaining compliance with school, district, and state guidelines
• Familiarity with Texas special education processes (ARD/IEP meetings, progress monitoring, service documentation
• Experience providing group and individual therapy sessions in a classroom setting
• Experience training or coaching staff on integrating music strategies into daily instruction

Special Knowledge/Skills: 

• Knowledge of the needs of students with disabilities across a range of ages and abilities
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills when working with students, staff, and families
• Ability to provide professional development and in-service training to staff
• Knowledge of general education music programs to support inclusion and collaborative opportunities
• Understanding of IEP development, implementation, and progress monitoring
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., teachers, SLPs, OT/PT, administrators)
• Skill in using music-based interventions to support communication, behavior, social-emotional, and motor goals
• Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate documentation in compliance with district and state guidelines
• Flexibility and adaptability in a variety of classroom and campus settings

Function:
The Music Therapist evaluates and provides music therapy services to students with disabilities to support their access to educational environment and assist in achieving their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

Reports To:
Special Education Coordinator

Responsibilities:
Instructional Management

1. Provides direct individual and group music therapy services in accordance with students' IEPs
2. Conducts assessments and evaluations to determine the need of music therapy services
3. Develops and implements therapy plans aligned with IEP goals
4. Collaborate with campus staff to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate music therapy services
5. Utilizes data (IEPs, progress monitoring, and student records) to guide instruction and program improvement
6. Provides music therapy strategies, resources, and materials to support instructional goals
7. Participates in ARD meetings and provides input regarding student needs and services
8. Demonstrates effective music therapy techniques to support student success

School/Organization Climate

1. Communicates and promotes high expectations for special education staff and students in the music program
2. Promotes use of positive discipline management plan to special education classrooms
3. Recognizes/rewards music therapy students' accomplishments in a variety of ways
4. Facilitates conflict resolution through the use of effective communication skills

School/Organizational Improvement

1. Assists at the departmental level in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of special education policies, programs, and curriculum as they relate to the music therapy program.
2. Utilizes information systems to monitor special education students' progress as the basis for educational program improvement (e.g., assessments, attendance, IEP mastery, etc.).
3. Assesses annually (through the Admission Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process) attainment of lEP objectives and analyzes appropriate placement
4. Collaborates with staff to support effective service delivery models

Personnel Management
 

1. Encourages participation by special education staff in staff development options available to address program/District/employee goals.
2. Serves as leader of special education staff development sessions.
3. Communicates expectations to special education staff regarding job performance.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

1. Ensures students are coded accurately on ARD service page for monitoring purposes.
2. Facilitates prompt and accurate reports from campus to special education office.
3. Monitors the use and storage of materials and equipment to comply with state/federal laws and regulations.

Student Management

1. Collaborates with campus staff and parents to address student needs and concerns
2. Supports the delivery of related services of students with specialized needs
3. Demonstrates effective classroom strategies and techniques for improving classroom and student issues
4. Conducts conferences with parents, teachers, and staff regarding student progress

School/Community Relations

1. Promotes positive staff and community relations through effective dissemination of information.
2. Communicates clearly the district's music therapy program, goals, and new directions to staff and parents to broaden their knowledge of the program.
3. Responds to the concerns of parents and the community in a timely manner.

Professional Growth and Development

1. Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner.
2. Participates in available employee development activities.
3. Uses information provided through evaluative feedback to improve performance.
4. Assumes responsibility for acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for fulfilling job duties and improving leadership skills.

May supervise a music therapy assistant

• Hourly district-wide travel daily; moderate lifting and positioning of students; carries heavy musical equipment from campus to campus daily
