What is an independent contractor software developer?

An Independent Contractor Software Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains software applications while working independently rather than as a traditional employee. They are typically hired on a contractual basis to complete specific projects or provide specialized expertise for a set duration. Independent contractors manage their own schedules, handle multiple clients, and are responsible for their own taxes and business expenses. This arrangement offers flexibility but also requires strong self-management, business skills, and a clear understanding of project requirements.

How do independent contractor software developers typically manage client communication and project expectations?

As an Independent Contractor Software Developer, clear and consistent client communication is essential to ensure project requirements, timelines, and deliverables are well understood by all parties. Contractors often use project management tools, regular status updates, and well-defined contracts to set expectations from the outset. Proactively addressing questions, setting realistic deadlines, and documenting progress help prevent misunderstandings and foster strong client relationships, which can lead to repeat business and referrals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development principles, and relevant experience or a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and proficiency in popular programming languages, along with certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate, are often beneficial. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities set standout contractors apart, enabling effective client interaction and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing high-quality software, meeting client expectations, and managing projects independently.

What is the difference between Independent Contractor Software Developer vs Freelance Software Engineer?

AspectIndependent Contractor Software DeveloperFreelance Software Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires relevant coding certifications or degreesOften has similar credentials, but not always mandatory
Work EnvironmentWorks independently, often remotely or on client sitesOperates independently, managing multiple clients or projects
Employer/Industry UsageHired directly by companies or through agencies for specific projectsHired directly by clients or through platforms for project-based work
Search/Comparison IntentOften compared based on project scope, independence, and contractual termsCompared for flexibility, project variety, and client interaction

Both roles involve independent work in software development, requiring similar skills and credentials. The main difference lies in terminology and slight variations in work setup, but they are often used interchangeably in the industry.

Are independent contractor software developers still in high demand?

Independent contractor software developers continue to be in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation and the need for specialized skills in areas like web development, mobile apps, and cloud computing. Many organizations prefer flexible, project-based work, making freelance and contract roles a common employment option in the tech industry.

How much do independent contractor software developers make?

Independent contractor software developers typically earn between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on experience, specialization, and project complexity. Annual income can vary widely, often ranging from $50,000 to over $150,000 for experienced freelancers working on multiple projects or high-demand skills.

Job description

Job Description Summary
Software Engineer - CT Image Generation (Platform)
The team behind industry-leading CT scanners is seeking highly motivated software engineers to help build the next generation of medical imaging technology.
Job Description
About the team:
Every CT image a radiologist interprets passes through our software. We transform raw detector measurements into clinically meaningful images that help physicians diagnose strokes, detect tumors, identify fractures, and guide critical patient care decisions. This work requires balancing image quality, computational performance, radiation dose, and the realities of clinical workflows.
Our team operates at the intersection of software engineering, applied mathematics, high-performance computing, and medical device development. Almost no engineer arrives with expertise in all these areas, and that is expected. The engineers who thrive here are deeply curious, learn rapidly, embrace challenging and ambiguous problems and are willing to step outside their comfort zone to develop new skills.
We are looking for engineers who take ownership, continuously seek to improve, and are motivated by solving meaningful problems that have a direct impact on patient care. Success in this role comes not from knowing everything on day one, but from having the curiosity, resilience, and drive to learn, contribute, and grow into increasingly complex technical challenges.
In this role you will:
  • Design, develop, and maintain the software platform, frameworks, and runtime infrastructure that enable reconstruction and imaging algorithms to run efficiently in production environments.
  • Build scalable, high-performance software components that leverage modern computing architectures, including multicore CPUs, GPUs, and heterogeneous compute environments.
  • Develop platform capabilities, APIs, tooling, and automation that improve developer productivity, software quality, testability, and deployment efficiency.
  • Partner closely with algorithm developers, system engineers, and product teams to understand requirements and deliver robust platform solutions that accelerate innovation.
  • Drive software architecture, reliability, performance, and maintainability across the platform while applying strong software engineering principles and modern development practices.
  • Take ownership of complex technical challenges, contribute to long-term platform strategy, and help establish best practices that enable team success.
  • Build expertise, take ownership of complex problems, show accountability while understanding business success is achieved as a team.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related STEM field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in C++ on Linux; comfort with Git and CI/CD
  • Familiarity with GPU technologies; CUDA or OpenCL

Desired Characteristics
We are seeking engineers who demonstrate exceptional potential through curiosity, ownership, learning agility, and technical excellence.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and a desire to understand systems deeply, not just use them.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, tools, and domains quickly and independently.
  • Self-motivated and energized by solving difficult, ambiguous problems with limited direction.
  • Takes ownership of problems, drives solutions to completion, and continuously seeks better approaches.
  • Resourceful in overcoming obstacles and finding practical solutions when the path forward is unclear.
  • Comfortable contributing across all phases of software development, including requirements, design, implementation, testing, debugging, performance optimization, and support.
  • Strong systems-thinking skills with the ability to understand complex interactions across software and hardware components.
  • Actively seeks feedback, learns from mistakes, and continuously improves technical and professional capabilities.
  • Collaborative team player who elevates those around them through knowledge sharing, constructive discussion, and technical leadership.
  • Demonstrates sound technical judgment, balancing innovation, quality, and delivery.

Additional Technical Experience (Preferred)
  • Experience designing and developing software platforms, frameworks, SDKs, libraries, or shared infrastructure used by multiple development teams.
  • Strong understanding of Linux systems programming, concurrency, multithreading, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with distributed systems, microservices architectures, containers, orchestration technologies, and cloud-native development practices.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, build systems, automated testing frameworks, developer tooling, and software quality processes.
  • Experience developing software that leverages GPUs or heterogeneous compute environments, including integration with CUDA, OpenCL, or other accelerator technologies.
  • Familiarity with observability and operational tooling, including logging, monitoring, profiling, debugging, and performance analysis.
  • Experience designing APIs and software architectures that support extensibility, maintainability, and long-term product evolution.
  • Medical imaging, scientific computing, high-performance computing, or other computationally intensive software domains.

What Success Looks Like
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the team's development environment, including C++, Linux, CI/CD workflows, and GPU-accelerated computing.
  • Build sufficient domain knowledge to participate in technical design discussions and influence implementation decisions.
  • Contribute code that is maintainable, well-tested, and meets medical device quality standards.
  • Deliver software features, platform enhancements, or performance optimizations that become part of a released CT product.
