Independent Contractor Front End Developer information

What is an independent contractor front end developer?

An Independent Contractor Front End Developer is a self-employed professional who specializes in building and maintaining the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. Unlike full-time employees, they work on a contract basis for various clients, often managing multiple projects at once. Their main responsibilities include designing responsive layouts, implementing user interfaces with technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and ensuring compatibility across browsers and devices. Independent contractors typically have the flexibility to set their own schedules and rates, but are also responsible for managing their own taxes and business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor front end developer?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Front End Developer, you need expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Vue, often backed by a strong portfolio and relevant project experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), build tools, and sometimes certifications in web development are commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and client communication skills help you stand out and deliver projects efficiently. These skills are crucial for creating high-quality, user-friendly web interfaces while meeting client deadlines and adapting to varied project requirements.

How does being an independent contractor front end developer impact collaboration on projects compared to working as a full-time employee?

As an independent contractor front end developer, you often collaborate remotely with clients and cross-functional teams, using tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub to communicate and track progress. While you may have less face-to-face or spontaneous interaction than in-house employees, clear communication and scheduled meetings are emphasized to ensure alignment. Building trust and delivering consistent results are key, and you'll generally have more autonomy in managing your workflow and hours. However, you may need to proactively clarify expectations, project requirements, and feedback loops to maintain efficient collaboration.

Job description

We are seeking a Frontend Web Developer to support the Content Tech/Production team and would like to receive some resumes in response to this request. Please let us know if you need any further details. Kindly share the resume along with the rate card.

What we are looking for is a front-end web developer who can create HTML, CSS, and JS to define the structures and display of our curriculum content. The content would be stored independently and framed into different LES systems based on business needs, so the ideal candidate would have experience with Canvas, ideally with more learning ecosystems to understand the nuances of allowable content in each LES. This person should also have experience with delivering content via LTIs into learning ecosystems. This web developer would work directly with the content production and delivery team, as well as UI and learning designers, to determine the final output and resolve ongoing issues.
