What is incident management?

Incident management is the process used by organizations to identify, analyze, and respond to unplanned events or disruptions that can affect normal operations. The goal is to restore service operation as quickly as possible while minimizing the impact on business processes and customers. This involves logging incidents, categorizing and prioritizing them, and then coordinating response and resolution activities. Effective incident management helps organizations improve service quality, maintain compliance, and protect their reputation.

How does an incident management professional typically coordinate with other departments during a major incident?

Incident Management professionals play a central role in coordinating responses during major incidents by acting as the primary point of contact between technical teams, management, and sometimes external stakeholders. They facilitate regular communication, organize incident bridges or war rooms, and ensure that each department—such as IT, security, and customer support—provides the necessary updates and resources. Clear documentation and timely escalation are key practices, helping to minimize downtime and keep everyone aligned. Collaboration often involves working under pressure, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an incident management professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Incident Management, you need strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of IT service management frameworks, often supported by certifications like ITIL. Familiarity with incident tracking tools such as ServiceNow, Jira, or BMC Remedy is typically required. Exceptional communication, decision-making under pressure, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for coordinating rapid responses and collaborating across teams. These skills and qualifications are vital for minimizing downtime, ensuring service continuity, and maintaining organizational resilience during critical incidents.

  • Maintain a strong engineering culture that values technical excellence, practical problem solving, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and client success.
  • Promote the responsible use of AI-enabled development tools for coding, testing, documentation, analysis, solution design, and delivery acceleration.
What will you bring to Zotec:

  • Flexible mentality; willing and capable of performing varied tasks and adapting to change

  • High attention to detail and adherence to established processes
Preferred
  • 3 or more years of management experience

  • Experience or familiarity with microservices and event-driven architecture
  • Experience with OKR or other similar goal management system
  • Experience with tracking and improving code quality, security and productivity
