Position Overview:

The Town of Avon, Colorado, is accepting applications for a Swim Program Instructor I.

The Swim Program Instructor I is responsible for providing leadership, direction and hands-on development and implementation with the objective to yield the highest attainable levels of excellence in instruction as well as individual and team performance for the Community Swim Program, in the areas of USA Swimming, Recreational Swimming, and the Learn-To-Swim program. This position is responsible for developing and improving the technical and physical swimming skills of each participant while providing a safe, fun, and educational environment and orienting participants to the Learn-to-Swim progression and competitive swimming.

Essential Functions:

  1. Develop appropriate means necessary to offer quality swim lessons while remaining up to date on current trends
  2. Design, organize, and direct activities of participants in order to provide a high level of quality instruction for all participants
  3. Communicate and interact effectively with class participants, parents/guardians, and the public, as appropriate, to ensure awareness of the program
  4. Teach with encouragement, positive reinforcement, and assist participants and parents/guardians in recognizing and understanding swimming developments and achievements
  5. Work with the Swim Program Supervisor on an on-going basis to upgrade, improve and refine individual teaching skills related to teaching effective swimming lessons to various age groups and skill levels
  6. Accurately track participant attendance, progress, and payments; notify parents of child's progress and of payments due; and submit paperwork and records to the Swim Program Supervisor
  7. Issue Learn-To-Swim certificates and update participant files after each session
  8. Resolve simple public complaints in matters related to swimming instruction and refer other complaints to the Swim Program Supervisor
  9. Enforce pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals, take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents
  10. Report damage to equipment and/or injuries to participants by completing an Incident Report form when necessary and submitting it the Swim Program Supervisor
  11. Educate participants on safe habits and attitudes around aquatic areas
  12. Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with the Recreation Center's emergency action plan

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge and application of teaching swimming and water safety skills
  • Considerable knowledge of program content and teaching techniques governing all levels of Learn-to-Swim programs
  • Thorough knowledge of Avon Recreation Center rules, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to work with resources available to enhance program instruction
  • Must possess current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) month of hire; all swimming skills and certifications must remain current
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to develop, instruct, and oversee assigned programs and supervise large groups of individuals
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate in English effectively both verbally and in writing; Spanish is considered a plus
  • Must be at least 15 years old

Special Requirements: Prior experience in instructional swim is preferred and training in teaching Learn-To-Swim classes is required. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence of required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
