What does an in house litigation counsel do?

An In House Litigation Counsel is an attorney employed by a company or organization to manage and oversee its legal disputes and litigation matters. Their responsibilities include advising executives on potential legal risks, developing litigation strategies, coordinating with outside counsel, and representing the company in court or during settlement negotiations. They focus on protecting the company’s legal interests and minimizing exposure to legal liabilities while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. In House Litigation Counsel often handles a broad range of issues, from contract disputes to employment matters and regulatory investigations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an in house litigation counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as an In House Litigation Counsel, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, and substantial experience in litigation, particularly handling complex legal matters relevant to the company's industry. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and e-discovery tools is typically required. Strong negotiation, analytical thinking, and clear communication skills help you effectively advise business stakeholders and manage disputes. These abilities are crucial for protecting the organization's interests, minimizing legal risks, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws.
