What do you do in design technology?

In design technology, professionals develop and implement innovative solutions by combining design principles with technological tools such as CAD software, 3D modeling, and prototyping. They often collaborate with engineers, designers, and clients to create functional and aesthetically appealing products or systems, requiring technical skills and knowledge of industry standards. The role may involve project management, testing, and refining designs to meet specifications and user needs.

What careers use InDesign?

InDesign is widely used in careers such as graphic design, publishing, marketing, and advertising, where creating layouts for print and digital media is essential. Professionals in these roles often use InDesign alongside other Adobe Creative Cloud tools and may require skills in typography, layout design, and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Technology professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technology professional, you need a strong background in design principles, engineering concepts, and problem-solving, often supported by a relevant degree or technical diploma. Proficiency with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and rapid prototyping systems is typically required. Creative thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on innovative projects and presenting ideas clearly. These skills ensure the successful development and realization of functional, user-centered designs in competitive industries.

What jobs can I do with design technology?

With a background in design technology, you can pursue roles such as design technologist, user experience (UX) designer, product designer, or digital designer. These jobs often require skills in graphic design, prototyping tools, and understanding of user-centered design principles, and may involve working in creative, tech, or advertising environments.

What jobs combine Design and Technology?

Jobs that combine Design and Technology include roles like User Experience (UX) Designer, Interaction Designer, Product Designer, and Digital Designer. These positions often require skills in graphic design, user research, and proficiency with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and prototyping software, working in collaborative environments to develop innovative digital products.

What is the difference between In Design Technology vs Graphic Designer?

Both roles are vital in media and marketing industries, with their distinctions mainly in technical versus creative emphasis.

What is design technology?

Design technology is a field that combines creativity, engineering, and technology to design and create innovative products, systems, or solutions. Professionals in design technology use a mix of technical skills—such as CAD (computer-aided design), prototyping, and materials science—alongside problem-solving and design thinking. The field covers various industries, including product design, architecture, engineering, and digital media. Design technologists often collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to turn ideas into functional and aesthetic outcomes.

How does a role in Design Technology typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Professionals in Design Technology frequently work alongside teams such as engineering, marketing, and product management to ensure that design concepts are feasible, user-friendly, and aligned with business goals. Regular meetings and collaborative software tools are commonly used to facilitate communication and coordinate project milestones. This cross-functional teamwork helps to integrate user experience, technical constraints, and market needs into the final product. Being open to feedback and adaptable to changing requirements are important aspects of thriving in this collaborative environment.

As our firm continues to grow, we're seeking a Design Technology Specialist who is passionate about improving how design teams work through technology, automation, and continuous innovation.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives on solving technical challenges, building efficient systems, and helping others succeed. You'll serve as one of the firm's primary resources for Revit content, production standards, and user support while collaborating with our Design Technology team to implement smarter workflows and explore emerging technologies.

If you're energized by creating solutions that improve productivity, quality, and consistency across an entire organization, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do:

Advance Our Digital Design Environment

  • Create, maintain, and optimize high-quality Revit families and content.
  • Manage and organize the firm's Revit content library.
  • Develop and maintain Revit templates that support consistent project delivery.
  • Continuously improve content performance, usability, and quality.

Support Our Design Teams

  • Provide day-to-day technical support for Revit users across multiple studios.
  • Troubleshoot complex modeling, documentation, and production challenges.
  • Partner with project teams to develop practical solutions to technical issues.
  • Identify recurring production obstacles and recommend long-term improvements.

Drive Standards & Training

  • Develop and maintain production standards, documentation, and best-practice guides.
  • Deliver targeted training sessions to improve user proficiency and consistency.
  • Mentor team members and promote adoption of firmwide standards and workflows.

Innovate & Improve

  • Collaborate with the Design Technology team to enhance workflows and production efficiency.
  • Evaluate new Autodesk features, software updates, and emerging technologies.
  • Support automation initiatives using Dynamo, AI-enabled workflows, and other innovative tools.
  • Recommend practical solutions that improve quality, consistency, and project delivery.

What We're Looking For:

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit.
  • Proven experience creating and maintaining Revit families.
  • Experience developing and managing Revit templates.
  • Strong understanding of architectural documentation and construction practices.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while balancing immediate support requests with long-term initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and implementing office production standards.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or supporting Revit users.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or workflow automation within the design process.
  • Experience with Dynamo, scripting, or programming is a plus—but not required.

Why Forum?

At Forum, you'll join a collaborative, employee-owned firm where technology is viewed as a strategic advantage. We continually invest in our people, processes, and tools to help our teams work smarter and deliver exceptional design solutions.

We offer:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Professional development and continuing education opportunities
  • A collaborative culture that encourages innovation and continuous improvement
  • The opportunity to help shape the future of design technology within a growing firm

If you're passionate about design technology and enjoy helping others succeed through smarter tools and better workflows, we'd love to hear from you.
