What is an imports manager?

Imports Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the process of bringing goods and materials into a country from abroad. They coordinate with suppliers, ensure compliance with import regulations, manage documentation, and handle logistics to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of products. Their role often involves staying up-to-date with international trade laws, negotiating with customs officials, and optimizing supply chain processes. Imports Managers play a crucial role in helping companies maintain inventory levels and meet customer demand efficiently.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an imports manager?

To thrive as an Imports Manager, you need strong knowledge of international trade regulations, logistics, and supply chain management, often supported by a degree in business, logistics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as ERP systems, customs management software, and relevant certifications like CGBP (Certified Global Business Professional) is typically required. Excellent negotiation, organizational, and cross-cultural communication skills help build relationships with suppliers and streamline operations. These skills ensure efficient, compliant, and cost-effective import processes that support overall business objectives.

What are common challenges imports managers face when coordinating with international suppliers?

Imports Managers often encounter challenges such as navigating complex customs regulations, managing communication across different time zones, and ensuring timely delivery despite potential delays at ports. They must also stay updated on changing trade policies and tariffs that can impact costs and logistics. Effective coordination with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal stakeholders is crucial to minimize disruptions and keep the supply chain running smoothly.

What is the difference between Imports Manager vs Customs Coordinator?

Job description

Ocean Freight Sales Representative - Ocean Import, Iron & Steel

If you sell ocean imports to Midwest Iron & Steel importers through West Coast and Southeast gateways railed inland to Chicago and the Midwest, this role keeps your accounts attributed to you and your commission uncapped. Year 1 commission runs at 15% of gross profit, with no cap, and you retain pricing and booking authority, with attribution locked in the CRM from day one.

About Skypace

Skypace serves shippers whose freight programs depend on consistent execution across repeated ocean movements, multiple service providers, and constant commercial pressure on cost, timing, and space allocation. For these companies, performance is shaped by how systematically pricing, allocation, and milestone visibility move alongside the shipment itself.

Skypace operates a global operating environment where this coordination is built into the workflow as a structural standard. Shippers, carriers, drayage providers, and internal teams operate through a shared data structure that accumulates context, supports timely decisions, and preserves the operational record across the shipment lifecycle.

Today, this model supports more than 150 customers across 18 countries through direct integrations with top 10 ocean carriers, among them MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, COSCO, and Hapag-Lloyd. The operating environment optimizes shipper performance across freight cost, communication discipline, error reduction, booking speed, and visibility into how each participating party performs against commitment.

Operational data accumulates as a clean, structured record that supports continuous process improvement today and becomes foundational as supply chains integrate AI-driven decision agents into planning, execution, and exception handling.

Why this role exists

This role builds out Skypace's Paper & Packaging ocean import portfolio through the New York and Newark gateway, across paper, paperboard, pulp, and packaging materials. It is positioned for a sales professional who already operates inside the Northeast Paper & Packaging import ecosystem and whose book benefits from broader carrier coverage, faster pricing response, and reliable handling across the shipment lifecycle.

Experience

3+ years (36 months)

Incentive

Year 1: 15% of GP, no cap. Sunset: 12% (Y2), 9% (Y3+). Bonus accelerator: 10% of GP on three highest GP months.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of ocean freight sales with verifiable client relationships among Midwest Iron & Steel importers
  • Lane fluency into West Coast and Southeast gateways railed inland to Chicago and the Midwest
  • Fluency in anti-dumping and countervailing duty exposure, mill test certificate handling, and heavy-cargo planning
  • Fluency in import freight vocabulary (demurrage and detention mechanics, free time at port, ISF compliance, House BL versus Master BL, customs entry timing)
  • Decision-maker access at two or more accounts
Responsibilities
  • Grow and expand a portfolio of Midwest Iron & Steel importer accounts
  • Track overall account and portfolio performance
  • Partner with the procurement and account management teams to build more competitive service proposals for customers across pricing, technology, and scale
  • Track attribution in CRM from day one of activation, with account managers and operations owning day-to-day client management and delivery
Skills
  • Iron and steel import, anti-dumping documentation, mill test certificate handling
  • CRM operation
  • ISF compliance
How the operation runs

Skypace operates on a proactive monitoring discipline. Milestones are tracked through live data across the entire shipment ecosystem. When a deviation in schedule, cost, or capacity surfaces within the operating environment, Skypace initiates the next operational action before the client encounters the problem.

The instant-quote and online booking engine compresses commercial response time from days to minutes. Carrier MQC commitments hold during peak season, which is the period when allocation decides whether a shipper's seasonal cycle preserves its margin or absorbs unplanned cost.

The quote engine surfaces every accessorial at the quote stage, including peak surcharges, GRI, port congestion fees, drayage components, and specialty equipment or reefer plug charges where applicable. The number the client sees at quote stands on the invoice. Skypace treats pricing integrity as a commercial discipline that holds from quote through to settlement.

Compliance

Skypace operates in full compliance with international freight forwarding regulations. Maxton Shipping Inc DBA Skypace is a registered NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) under FMC License 027662.
