Why this role is special
The Duty Drawback & Advisory Specialist is responsible for executing day-to-day operations for Duty Drawback clients while supporting a broader portfolio through advisory services. This role ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and standard operating procedures (SOPs), while optimizing data analysis to identify efficiencies, develop solutions, and deliver exceptional service. The specialist is responsible for presenting and implementing strategies to maximize clients' Duty Drawback programs. In the advisory capacity, this role supports clients with country of origin (COO) analysis, HTS classification, compliance auditing, and trade data reviews to strengthen their overall import/export programs.
This position requires a strong understanding of the Customs entry process, the ability to perform high-quality data analysis, and adherence to required procedures for compliant Duty Drawback claims. The role operates within a collaborative, cross-functional team environment across the United States.
Candidates should also possess foundational knowledge of trade compliance principles, including tariff classification, country-of-origin rules, and import/export regulatory requirements, to effectively support Advisory Trade Compliance Services.
Key Responsibilities:
Duty Drawback Operations
• Complete Duty Drawback claim filings, including:
o Compiling and indexing required documentation
o Analyzing large data sets (Customs broker data, client ERP systems, ACE, AES, and Bills of Materials)
o Reviewing data for quality, completeness, and errors
o Creating compliant Duty Drawback claims within internal systems
o Assessing applicable Duty Drawback provisions based on client data to maximize refunds
o Auditing claims and resolving discrepancies
o Submitting claims to CBP and monitoring status
o Communicating with CBP and supporting Full Desk Reviews (FDRs)
  • Manage and apply all Duty Drawback provisions, including manufacturing drawback, rulings, and Bills of Materials
  • Draft and file Duty Drawback Privilege Applications
  • Manage data, documentation, and filings throughout the claim lifecycle.
  • Analyze client and internal data for quality issues, identify root causes, and partner with GTS leadership to resolve proactively
  • Manage data, documents, and filings.

Client & Operational Support
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, understand their needs, and provide tailored solutions and support.
  • Assist in reviewing client data for new potential clients.
  • Creation of and maintenance of standard operating procedures.
  • Implement and actively learn new client requirements, including onboarding.
  • Assist in reviewing client data for new potential clients.

Advisory Trade Compliance Services:
• Perform country of origin (COO) analysis for client products, applying applicable origin rules and supporting documentation requirements under CBP regulations and relevant trade agreements
• Conduct HTS classification research and provide advisory classification opinions for client product portfolios, ensuring accuracy and consistency across entry data
• Execute trade compliance audits, including reviews of entry summaries, classification determinations, valuation methodologies, and country of origin declarations to identify errors and areas of potential exposure
• Perform import and export data reviews to assess overall compliance posture, identify trends, and develop actionable recommendations for process improvements and duty savings opportunities
• Prepare written advisory reports, classification memoranda, and audit findings summaries for delivery to clients and internal stakeholders
• Support clients in developing and implementing internal trade compliance programs, policies, and training materials aligned with CBP expectations and industry best practices

Key Competencies:
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable CBP regulations, including Duty Drawback, tariffs, trade agreements, and import/export restrictions.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and industry developments.
  • Prepare and submit accurate Duty Drawback claims across multiple drawback types, with the ability to continuously build expertise in new areas.
  • Proactively identify potential issues and opportunities, and develop practical, compliant solutions.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and government agencies, including CBP.
  • Demonstrate strong data analysis capabilities, with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Apply HTS classification principles, General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs), and country of origin rules to deliver accurate, defensible advisory opinions.
  • Conduct structured compliance audits and data reviews, clearly documenting findings, root causes, and corrective action recommendations.
  • Translate complex trade compliance topics into clear, actionable guidance for clients across varying levels of trade expertise.

Required Qualifications:
  • Customs brokerage experience
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; this is a client-facing role
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation preferred, but not required
  • Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) preferred, but not required
  • Experience with HTS classification, country of origin analysis, or trade compliance auditing
  • Familiarity with ACE data, CBP rulings database (CROSS), and tariff schedule research tools
  • Demonstrated interest in continued learning and development within trade compliance and Duty Drawback
