Job description

Traffic Supervisors

Westwood Police Department

The Westwood Police Department is currently seeking part-time Traffic Supervisors who are dependable, professional, flexible and have a caring attitude. Traffic Supervisors will direct and control traffic movements as they relate to the safe passage of school-age children walking to and from Westwood schools.

Schedule: Two 1-hour crossings per school day while school is in session (one morning and one afternoon crossing); or one 1-hour crossing per school day (morning or afternoon). The ability to cover both morning and afternoon crossings is preferred.

Salary and benefits: $24.96 per hour for 8-10 hours per week (opportunity for additional hours as need arises). Part-time, union position in the Westwood Traffic Supervisors Association. Benefits include a clothing allowance, paid sick and bereavement time, paid holidays during school year, and up to five paid snow days if school is cancelled.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure the safety of school-age children and other pedestrians during school arrival and dismissal times.
  • Manage pedestrian and vehicle interactions with authority and care.
  • Maintain control over pedestrian movement toward and away from designated school crossings.
  • Effectively communicate direction and control of pedestrian and vehicular movement through both verbal commands and established hand signals.
  • Assess vehicular speed and timing so as to provide adequate warning in stopping traffic.
  • Remain alert to suspicious activities within the proximity of the assigned school crossing which may represent potential risk or harm to children.
  • Administer immediate temporary first aid to anyone who demonstrates need until appropriate emergency response units arrive.
  • Provide general assistance to school-age children when assistance may be required.

Qualifications and experience: Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a High School Diploma/GED; and have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License. Candidates must possess the ability to effectively control and direct vehicular traffic and provide general supervision to school-age children. The position requires working outdoors under all weather conditions. Must be able to clear a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check. CPR/AED certification required (Westwood Police Department will arrange training on an annual basis).
