What is the difference between Immediate Sign Bonus vs Travel Nurse?

FeatureImmediate Sign BonusTravel Nurse
PurposeOne-time payment to incentivize new hiresIncentive for accepting travel assignments
AmountTypically $1,000 - $10,000Varies, often includes housing stipends and bonuses
TimingPaid upon signing or start datePaid during or after assignment
EligibilityNew hires in specific roles or shortagesRegistered nurses accepting travel positions

While both offer financial incentives, an Immediate Sign Bonus is a lump sum paid upfront to new employees, whereas a Travel Nurse bonus is tied to accepting temporary assignments, often including additional stipends. Both serve to attract healthcare professionals but differ in timing and structure.

Are there specific expectations or commitments associated with accepting a position that offers an immediate sign-on bonus?

Yes, positions offering an immediate sign-on bonus often come with specific commitments, such as a required minimum length of employment (commonly 6–24 months). If you leave the organization before fulfilling this period, you may be required to repay all or part of the bonus. It's important to carefully review your employment agreement to understand any repayment clauses or conditions tied to the bonus, and to clarify these details with HR before accepting the offer.

What is an immediate sign bonus?

An immediate sign bonus is a monetary incentive offered to new employees upon accepting a job offer. Unlike traditional sign-on bonuses that may be paid after a probationary period or in installments, an immediate sign bonus is typically paid shortly after the employee starts their new job, sometimes on their first paycheck. This bonus is used by employers to attract qualified candidates in competitive job markets and may come with conditions, such as a requirement to stay with the company for a minimum period. If the employee leaves before that period, they may have to repay the bonus. Immediate sign bonuses are most common in industries facing talent shortages.
