What is an imaging service engineer?

An Imaging Service Engineer is a specialized technician responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing medical imaging equipment such as MRI machines, CT scanners, X-ray systems, and ultrasound devices. They ensure that this critical equipment operates safely and efficiently, often working in hospitals, clinics, or for equipment manufacturers. Their role may involve troubleshooting complex issues, performing routine maintenance, calibrating machines, and training healthcare staff on proper equipment use. Imaging Service Engineers play a vital part in maintaining the quality and safety of medical imaging services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an imaging service engineer?

To thrive as an Imaging Service Engineer, you need a strong background in electronics, biomedical engineering, or a related field, often supported by an associate or bachelor's degree. Familiarity with diagnostic imaging equipment (like MRI, CT, or X-ray machines), manufacturer-specific certifications, and experience using service management software are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, customer service orientation, and effective communication help you excel in troubleshooting and working with clinical staff. These skills are crucial to ensure the safe, reliable operation of medical imaging equipment, directly impacting patient care and clinical efficiency.

What are some typical challenges imaging service engineers face when maintaining complex medical imaging equipment?

Imaging Service Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting highly technical issues in advanced imaging systems, like MRI or CT scanners, under tight time constraints to minimize equipment downtime. They must also stay up-to-date with rapidly evolving technology and adhere to strict safety and compliance standards. Collaboration with clinical staff and vendors is essential for accurate problem diagnosis and timely repairs. Adaptability and strong communication skills are key to successfully handling these multifaceted tasks.

What is the difference between Imaging Service Engineer vs Medical Equipment Technician?

SummaryAt Varex Imaging, our Enterprise Services team supports the technology platforms that keep the business running, from enterprise applications and engineering software to databases, infrastructure, automation, and collaboration tools. As our environment continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Systems Engineer to help drive some of our most technically challenging and strategic initiatives.
This is a hands-on engineering position focused on database administration, application infrastructure, enterprise monitoring, automation, and complex software platforms. You'll play a key role in improving reliability, reducing operational risk, and building solutions that make technology services more efficient and scalable across the organization.
If you enjoy solving complex technical problems, automating manual processes, and partnering with stakeholders to deliver impactful technology solutions, this role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.Job Description

What You'll Do

Database, Server Infrastructure & Application Upgrades (Primary Focus)

  • Administer and support Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, backup and recovery, upgrades, access management, and new environment deployments.

  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for database and infrastructure-related issues.

  • Own OS and application upgrade projects across 20+ server-hosted applications, validating compatibility and coordinating downtime so systems stay current and supportable.

  • Manage supporting infrastructure tools such as Cohesity, license servers, and OnlineDTR.

Enterprise Application Monitoring

  • Contribute to expanding enterprise application monitoring (e.g., Zabbix) as capacity allows, alongside the primary database and infrastructure workload.

Engineering Software & Repository Governance

  • Deploy and configure engineering/CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, ANSYS, LabVIEW, Minitab, and similar) as project needs arise.

  • Partner with engineering stakeholders to scope these projects and communicate realistic timelines.

  • Establish baseline governance for GitHub and GitLab as capacity allows - repository standards, access controls, and administrative permissions - building toward fuller policy over time.

License Provisioning & AI Automation

  • Design automated provisioning workflows (e.g., API-triggered access into licensing groups) for high-volume software, partnering with the team's licensing coordinator.

  • Contribute to AI agent and workflow automation using Microsoft Copilot Studio, as a secondary contribution to the team's broader AI roadmap rather than a primary ownership area.

  • Collaborate with technology and business teams to identify opportunities where automation and AI can improve efficiency and user experience.

Operational Excellence

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational runbooks.

  • Serve as a technical resource for infrastructure, application, and database initiatives.

  • Provide backup coverage and technical depth across critical systems to improve overall resiliency and reduce single points of failure.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, database administration, or a related technical role.

  • Strong hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, backup and recovery, security, and access management.

  • Experience supporting and deploying enterprise applications in a production environment.

  • Proficiency with scripting and automation technologies such as PowerShell and/or Python.

  • Experience integrating systems through APIs and enterprise automation platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or administering solutions within Microsoft Copilot Studio.

  • Familiarity with an enterprise monitoring platform (Zabbix, SolarWinds, Datadog, Nagios, or similar).

  • Experience administering Git-based version control platforms (GitHub and/or GitLab), including repository access controls and governance policy.

  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for evaluating and piloting emerging AI tools for enterprise use.

  • Knowledge of enterprise AI platforms such as Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, or similar technologies.

  • Experience with Jira Service Management and Jira automation.

  • Experience deploying or supporting engineering and CAD software platforms.

  • Familiarity with enterprise backup and recovery technologies, including Cohesity.

  • Experience working within manufacturing, healthcare, medical device, or other regulated environments.
