What are some common challenges faced by IHC technicians and how can they be addressed?

IHC Technicians often encounter challenges such as variability in tissue sample quality, troubleshooting staining protocols, and managing a high volume of slides under tight deadlines. To address these, technicians frequently collaborate with pathologists and laboratory managers to standardize procedures, utilize control samples to ensure consistency, and stay updated on new reagents and automation technologies. Open communication within the lab and ongoing professional development are also key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring accurate, reliable results.

What is an IHC professional?

IHC stands for Immunohistochemistry, and IHC professionals are laboratory specialists who perform immunohistochemical staining on tissue samples. Their main role is to detect specific antigens in cells of a tissue section by using antibodies that bind to these antigens, which are then visualized under a microscope. This technique is widely used in medical diagnostics, especially in pathology to help diagnose diseases like cancer. IHC professionals are responsible for preparing slides, applying stains, interpreting results, and ensuring quality control throughout the process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Immunohistochemistry (IHC) technician?

To thrive as an IHC Technician, you need a background in biological sciences, laboratory experience, and knowledge of tissue staining and histological techniques, often supported by a degree in biology or medical laboratory science. Proficiency with laboratory instruments, automated staining platforms, and familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) are typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are valuable soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure accurate and reliable diagnostic results, which are crucial for effective patient care and research outcomes.

  • Translate business requirements into clear, testable functional requirements for Axiom implementation.
  • Maintain end to end traceability from Business requirements to functional specifications to Axiom logic to controls to report output.
  • Lead business analysis for regulatory reporting delivered through Axiom, including data sourcing and ingestion requirements, rule logic, adjustments, and calculation frameworks, report structure, hierarchies, and metadata configuration.
  • Define functional specifications for Axiom rules and mappings.
  • Drive data consistency across Axiom implementations to reduce manual overlays and EUCs.

    • write acceptance criteria aligned to regulatory and control expectations.
    • prioritize backlog based on regulatory deadlines and risk.
  • Drive Agile ceremonies and outcomes:
    • sprint planning, refinement, demos, retrospectives.
    • dependency and release management across Finance, Risk, and Technology.
  • Balance Agile delivery with regulatory documentation and evidence requirements.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Deep understanding of IHC regulatory reporting frameworks, governance, and controls.
  • Strong grasp of financial consolidation, legal entity reporting, and regulatory data dependencies.
  • Handson experience delivering regulatory reporting using a regulatory reporting platform including data ingestion and mapping, rule configuration and calculations, report production and validation.
  • Requirements elicitation, documentation, and stakeholder facilitation.
  • Process modeling, gap analysis, and control design.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills in dataintensive environments.
  • Executivelevel communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to influence across Finance, Risk, and Technology without direct authority.

The expected base salary ranges from $160k-$185k. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications and licenses obtained.
