Ignition Mes information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ignition MES engineer?

To thrive as an Ignition MES Engineer, you need strong expertise in manufacturing systems, industrial automation, and a solid understanding of Ignition software, typically supported by a background in engineering, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with PLCs, SQL databases, scripting languages (like Python), and official Inductive Automation Ignition certifications are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting issues. Mastery of these skills ensures reliable MES solutions, efficient plant operations, and successful project delivery.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working with Ignition MES, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working with Ignition MES often face challenges such as integrating the platform with existing legacy systems, ensuring data accuracy across multiple sources, and maintaining system uptime during upgrades or changes. Addressing these challenges typically involves thorough planning, ongoing collaboration with IT and operations teams, and keeping up-to-date with best practices and documentation provided by Inductive Automation. Regular training and leveraging the active Ignition community can also help in troubleshooting issues and optimizing system performance.

What is the difference between Ignition MES vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectIgnition MESManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of MES systems, automation, and sometimes certifications in industrial automationRequires engineering degrees, often with certifications in manufacturing or process engineering
Work EnvironmentWorks within manufacturing plants, focusing on MES system implementation and supportWorks in design, planning, and optimization of manufacturing processes, often in office and plant settings
Industry UsageCommonly used in industries with complex manufacturing processes like automotive, electronics, and pharmaceuticalsUsed across various manufacturing sectors to improve efficiency and process design
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for roles involving manufacturing systems integration and automationCompared for process optimization and production planning roles

While Ignition MES specialists focus on implementing and maintaining manufacturing execution systems, Manufacturing Engineers design and optimize manufacturing processes. Both roles are vital in modern manufacturing but differ in scope, credentials, and daily tasks.

What is an Ignition MES?

Ignition MES (Manufacturing Execution System) refers to a suite of software modules within the Ignition platform by Inductive Automation that helps manufacturers monitor, track, and optimize production processes on the plant floor. Ignition MES provides tools for real-time data collection, analysis, and reporting, helping companies improve quality, efficiency, and traceability. It integrates with PLCs, databases, and other industrial systems to provide a comprehensive view of manufacturing operations. This system is scalable and customizable, allowing businesses to tailor it to their unique production needs.

Description
WHAT FLEXWARE DOES
Manufacturers are the backbone of innovation-powering industries, improving lives, and keeping the world moving forward. That's where Flexware Innovation comes in. Behind every great product is a complex web of machines, technology, data, and people working together to make it happen. Flexware partners with manufacturers to guide their strategy and execute the solutions that bring it to life.
Founded in 1996, Flexware's teams of talented advisors and engineers leverage technology across industrial controls, manufacturing systems integration, software development, data engineering and management, and the ever-evolving landscape of emerging technologies.
Flexware is made up of problem-solvers, builders, and collaborators who care deeply about doing work that matters. We roll up our sleeves, dive into the details, and create solutions that stand the test of time, because our customers count on us to keep production moving.
Today, Flexware is growing with fresh momentum and purpose. We're investing in innovation, in our people, and in a culture where you can do your best work while living a balanced, meaningful life
WHAT YOU WILL DO
As an MES Consultant, you will work directly with our clients to gather and document the business and technical requirements that shape our manufacturing execution system (MES) solutions. You'll spend time on the plant floor and in stakeholder interviews uncovering how a client's operations really work, then translate what you learn into clear, actionable requirements that our architects and engineers can build from. You will also build a working knowledge of Flexware's MES/MOM offerings and delivery approach so you can speak knowledgeably with clients about our capabilities. Here are some of the responsibilities that you will be responsible for:
  • Lead and support requirements-gathering sessions and stakeholder interviews with client operations, quality, and IT personnel
  • Document current-state processes and future-state needs in clear, structured requirements documents, process maps, and functional specifications
  • Ask clarifying questions to uncover unstated assumptions, edge cases, and integration points that could affect project scope
  • Partner with solution architects and project managers to translate requirements into scope, estimates, and statements of work
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of Flexware's MES/MOM offerings and platforms at a high level, including but not limited to:
  • MES / SCADA / HMI (Wonderware, Ignition, TrakSYS, Siemens OpCenter, etc.)
  • Data historians (OSI PI, Rockwell FactoryTalk Historian, etc.)
  • Databases (SQL Server, Oracle, Postgres etc.)
  • Operational reporting (SSRS, etc.)
  • Custom application development (C#, .NET, etc.)
  • Participate in discovery workshops and site visits, both remote and on-site
  • Support proposal development by providing requirements input that informs scope and pricing
  • Maintain organized documentation across the project lifecycle, ensuring traceability from requirement to delivered functionality

**Please note that we are not interviewing candidates that require sponsorship now or in the future**
WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE DONE BEFORE
  • A bachelor's degree in business, engineering, information systems, or a similar technical or business concentration
  • 2+ years of experience in a business analyst, requirements analyst, consulting, or similar client-facing role - manufacturing, industrial, or software environments preferred
  • Experience interviewing stakeholders and documenting business and technical requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical and operational detail into clear documentation
  • Comfortable interviewing stakeholders at all levels, from plant floor operators to plant management
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills; able to manage multiple concurrent discovery efforts
  • An analytical mindset - able to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and dependencies in gathered information
  • Willingness and ability to travel to client sites as needed
  • Exposure to manufacturing environments, plant operations, or industrial automation is a plus
  • Familiarity with MES, MOM, ERP, or SCADA concepts is a plus

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
