Wildlife Technician

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Wildlife Technician. This position will be located at our Salmon Regional Office located in Salmon, Idaho. This is a temporary 8-month position and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week. There may be opportunity to extend the duration of employment at the end of the 8 months.

General Information
Positions in this classification are used for wildlife management and wildlife research. This position will provide field support for a large bighorn sheep research project, as well as field duties to support management of various big game and non-game wildlife species. This position will be required to travel to remote locations for data collection and management activities and will require the physical ability to walk and backpack for several hours; operate four-wheel drive and/or off-road vehicles; lift and carry up to 65 pounds; and work in extreme weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Frequent (overnight) in-state travel may be required.
Qualifications
• Some knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements; and wildlife management practices.
• Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing biological data.
• Valid driver's license.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have experience with wildlife capture and handling, monitoring marked wildlife and field necropsy techniques. Additional consideration may be given at the time of the interview to candidates who have this experience. Please be sure to include any experience you have in these areas.
Responsibilities
• Collect and manage large data sets for wildlife management. This may include preliminary analysis and organization of data.
• Assist regional staff with bighorn sheep disease management research projects. This may include capture, field monitoring, and data management.
• Assist regional staff with Chronic Wasting Disease monitoring through collection of biological samples and hunter interviews.
• Assist with wildlife monitoring actions the may include use of radio telemetry, conducting field necropsies, visual observations, and GPS based monitoring.
• Assist regional staff with responding to nuisance and injured wildlife.
• Participating in wildlife population surveys, including ground and aerial surveys, and interviewing hunters to obtain harvest data at check stations.
• Work and hike, with or without reasonable accommodation, in challenging and adverse terrain and weather conditions, including some long workdays, overnight stays, and weekend work.
• Safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, 4WD vehicles, OHVs, inflatable rafts and kayaks.
