What is an IDEXX internship?

Idexx Internships are structured programs offered by IDEXX Laboratories, a global leader in veterinary diagnostics and software, for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in fields such as science, technology, engineering, business, and more. These internships typically take place during the summer and last for 10-12 weeks, providing interns with real-world projects, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Interns work alongside professionals, contribute to meaningful work, and learn about the animal health industry. IDEXX internships are designed to help participants develop their skills, explore career paths, and potentially transition into full-time roles at the company.

What can I expect in terms of mentorship and learning opportunities during an IDEXX internship?

As an IDEXX intern, you can expect to be paired with experienced professionals who provide regular mentorship and guidance throughout your internship. Interns often participate in structured onboarding, project-based assignments, and cross-functional team meetings, which foster both technical and professional growth. The work environment is collaborative, and interns are encouraged to ask questions, seek feedback, and take ownership of meaningful projects. These experiences not only build practical skills but also help interns explore potential career paths within the company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IDEXX intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IDEXX Intern, you generally need a solid academic background in life sciences, engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, or industry-specific tools like LIMS is often required, and relevant coursework or certifications can be advantageous. Excellent communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns integrate quickly and contribute effectively to projects. These competencies ensure interns can support ongoing research, collaborate with professionals, and make the most of learning opportunities in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Job description

Practice big city medicine in a small town. Compassionate clinic dedicated to client care and excellence located in the sea side community of East Hampton, NY. We are community minded, work with several shelters, and host a triage facility for the local Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

The clinic is well equipped with digital x-ray (regular and dental), ultrasound, doppler BP, Olympus microscope, Idexx hematology and chemistry analyzers, orthopedic and ophthalmic surgical instrumentation, tonopen, endoscope, etc. We have an experienced staff that strives to provide excellent medical care with a warm and personal connection to our clients. We see patients seven days a week, but refer emergencies after hours so there is no overnight on call. Besides general medicine and surgery, we have special interests in cytology and dentistry, and my associate is also trained in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, as well as veterinary spinal manipulation. There is an extensive network of specialty hospitals available for referrals as needed.

The position is available immediately. In addition to competitive salary, we offer 3 weeks paid vacation, holidays, and CE. Benefits include full medical insurance and 401k plan. A four day week is an option, and professional growth is encouraged. Within the next few years there will be ownership opportunities.
