How much do ice engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for ice engineering in the United States is $31.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $37.98 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is ice engineering?

Ice engineering is a specialized field of engineering that focuses on understanding, designing, and managing structures and systems in icy environments, such as the Arctic or Antarctic regions. It involves studying the properties and behavior of ice, including sea ice, river ice, and lake ice, and how these interact with human-made structures like offshore platforms, ships, and bridges. Ice engineers play a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of infrastructure in cold regions by addressing challenges posed by freezing temperatures, ice movement, and ice loads. This field combines elements of civil, mechanical, and environmental engineering, often requiring knowledge of climate science and materials science as well.

What is the difference between Ice Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectIce EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering; specialized training in cold regionsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentCold climates, outdoor ice structures, polar regions, ice rink designFactories, machinery design, HVAC systems, diverse industries
Industry UsageConstruction of ice structures, polar research facilities, ice managementManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors

Ice Engineering focuses on designing and managing structures and systems in cold, icy environments, often requiring specialized knowledge of ice behavior. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader range of machinery and systems across various industries. While both fields require engineering degrees, Ice Engineers typically have expertise in cold climate applications, whereas Mechanical Engineers have a wider scope in machinery and system design.

What are some typical challenges faced by Ice Engineers when working in polar or cold-region environments?

Ice Engineers often face unique challenges such as extreme weather, unpredictable ice conditions, and logistical constraints in remote locations. These factors can impact project timelines, equipment functionality, and personal safety. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—such as environmental scientists, logistics coordinators, and structural engineers—is key to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring project success. Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills are essential for thriving in this dynamic and often rapidly changing environment.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

In the field of ice engineering, senior-level professionals such as geotechnical or structural engineers working in specialized industries or with extensive experience can earn $300,000 or more annually. High salaries are often associated with advanced expertise, certifications, and leadership roles in large projects or organizations.

Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

Ice engineering is a specialized field within civil engineering that focuses on designing and managing structures related to ice and cold environments. While senior civil engineers in high-paying industries or managerial roles can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000, such earnings are uncommon and typically require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership positions. Most civil engineers earn lower salaries, with top earners in specialized fields reaching higher compensation levels.

What is ICE in engineering?

In engineering, ICE typically refers to the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Internal Combustion Engine, depending on the context. For civil engineering roles, ICE often signifies membership or standards set by the Institution of Civil Engineers, while in mechanical engineering, it may relate to designing or maintaining internal combustion engines. Professionals in these fields may require relevant certifications, technical skills, and knowledge of industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ice Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ice Engineer, you need expertise in civil or mechanical engineering, a solid understanding of thermodynamics and material science, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with specialized modeling software (such as finite element analysis tools), data acquisition systems, and, for some roles, professional engineering certification is common. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and adaptability to challenging environments are valuable soft skills in this position. These competencies are critical for designing, monitoring, and maintaining structures or systems in icy conditions, ensuring safety and operational efficiency in harsh climates.

What engineers make $500,000?

In the field of ice engineering, senior-level professionals such as geotechnical or civil engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and advanced certifications can reach or exceed a $500,000 annual salary, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or with leadership roles. Achieving this level often requires years of experience, advanced degrees, and expertise in complex projects or management positions.
