As of Sep 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for ice cream parlor in the United States is $14.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $12.98 and $16.59 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an ice cream parlor worker do?

Employees at an ice cream parlor are responsible for serving customers by scooping and preparing ice cream, cones, sundaes, and other desserts. They may also handle cash registers, maintain cleanliness in the shop, restock toppings and supplies, and assist with opening or closing tasks. Good customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are important for this role. Some parlors may also require staff to make waffle cones, operate soft-serve machines, or assist with inventory.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work at an ice cream parlor?

To thrive as an Ice Cream Parlor Worker, you need excellent customer service skills, basic math abilities for handling transactions, and food safety knowledge, often obtained through on-the-job training or a food handler’s permit. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and equipment like freezers and scooping tools is typically required. Friendliness, teamwork, and strong communication are valuable soft skills for engaging customers and collaborating with coworkers. These skills ensure efficient service, customer satisfaction, and a safe, welcoming environment.

What are common challenges faced when working at an ice cream parlor, and how can they be managed?

Working at an ice cream parlor often involves handling busy periods, such as hot summer days or weekends, when customer lines can get long. Staying organized, communicating clearly with teammates, and maintaining a positive attitude help manage the rush. Another challenge can be keeping up with cleanliness and food safety standards, since ice cream can melt quickly and create messes. Being proactive about cleaning and following proper hygiene protocols ensures a safe and welcoming environment for both customers and staff.

Job description

Parlor’s Handcrafted Ice Creams

Parlor’s Ice Creams is Dallas’ ice cream shop. We serve classic scooped ice cream with super nostalgic flavors and make our ice cream the way it used to be made back in the day – from scratch, in-house. We source our ingredients from local businesses that use sustainable and organic practices that align with our values, when possible. We source, mix, age, pasteurize, bake, freeze, and scoop all in-house to create the best tasting ice cream out there. Parlor’s Ice Creams has been selling our pints and scoops since October 2019 at local farmers markets and pop-ups. Our Hillside Village scoop shop in Lakewood is our first brick-and-mortar shop and we will be opening our second shop Summer 2026.

Time Commitment: Part-Time (about 15-30 hours per week), Monday-Friday. NO WEEKENDS. Time commitment depends on the season. For example, production slows a little bit during the Fall & Winter and picks up during the Spring & Summer. Hours per week will vary depending on the season.
