How much do ic layout design jobs pay per hour?

As of May 28, 2026, the average hourly pay for ic layout design in Arizona is $38.49, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $54.42 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IC Layout Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IC Layout Designer, you need a solid background in electronics or electrical engineering, with expertise in semiconductor device physics and circuit design principles. Familiarity with EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics, and knowledge of industry standards like DRC/LVS are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with design and verification teams. These abilities are essential to ensure high-quality, manufacturable layouts that meet performance and reliability requirements in the competitive semiconductor industry.

What are some common challenges IC Layout Design engineers face when collaborating with circuit designers?

IC Layout Design engineers often work closely with circuit designers to translate schematic designs into physical layouts, which can present challenges such as resolving design-rule violations, managing tight space constraints, and ensuring signal integrity. Effective communication is essential to address trade-offs between performance, area, and manufacturability. Timely feedback loops and a collaborative approach help ensure that both the layout and schematic meet project specifications and timelines.

What is IC Layout Design?

IC Layout Design refers to the process of creating the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) on a semiconductor chip. It involves translating circuit schematics into geometric patterns that define the placement of transistors, interconnections, and other components on silicon. IC layout designers use specialized software tools to ensure that the design meets electrical, timing, and manufacturing requirements. This step is critical in the semiconductor manufacturing process, as it directly impacts the performance, size, and yield of the final IC.

What is the difference between Ic Layout Design vs IC Design Engineer?

AspectIC Layout DesignIC Design Engineer
Primary FocusCreating physical layouts of integrated circuitsDesigning circuit schematics and functional architecture
Skills RequiredCAD tools, layout optimization, fabrication process knowledgeCircuit theory, HDL coding, simulation
Work EnvironmentEDA tools, cleanroom facilities, collaboration with fabrication teamsDesign teams, simulation labs, software environments
CertificationsTypically none required, but certifications in CAD tools are beneficialEE degree, possibly certifications in digital design or verification

IC Layout Design focuses on physically implementing circuit designs on silicon, while IC Design Engineer involves creating the circuit architecture and logic. Both roles are essential in chip development, often working closely but with distinct skill sets and responsibilities.

Job description

Founded in 1976, Samtec is a privately held, $950 million global manufacturer of a broad line of electronic interconnect solutions, including High-Speed Board-to-Board, High-Speed Cables, Mid-Board and Panel Optics, Precision RF, Flexible Stacking, and Micro/Rugged components and cables. Samtec Technology Centers are dedicated to developing and advancing technologies, strategies and products to optimize both the performance and cost of a system from the bare die to an interface 100 meters away, and all interconnect points in between. With 40+ international locations and products sold in more than 125 different countries, Samtec’s global presence enables its unmatched customer service.

THIS POSITION WILL BE ONSITE AT SAMTEC'S DESIGN CENTER IN PHOENIX, AZ

Summary/Objective:  The Integrated Circuit Engineer designs and develops microwave, analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits for implementation on IC foundry processes for RF and gigabit-per-second data communications applications.  IC development tasks include the architecture definition, circuit design, synthesis, physical layout, verification, packaging and testing of hardware prototypes and high-volume IC products.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  1. Performs/Leads custom IC design on SiGe and CMOS processes, particularly at 130 nm process technologies and below, including schematic capture, IC layout, simulation, package analysis, evaluation board design, and design verification at the circuit block and full-chip levels.
  2. Design of microwave/RF/mixed-signal blocks including LNA, PA, VGA, VCO, PLL, ADC, DAC, and CDR from specification to tape-out.
  3. Develop test plan and perform measurements to verify design intent has been met using electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, VNAs, BERTs, and communications analyzers.
  4. Design of optical communications circuits including TIA, CTLE, and laser drivers.
  5. Design of precision supporting circuits including bandgap voltage reference, current sources, op amps, and feedback circuits.
  6. Design of power management blocks such as linear or switching regulators.
  7. IC layout execution and supervision of IC layout design specialists.
  8. Works with characterization and test engineering to define, conduct, and analyze data from product performance characterization through report documentation.
  9. Documents all relevant product and design information through the design review process and to provide guidance on product usage.
  10. Customer support as needed including on-site customer engagements, especially with internal customers.

*The responsibilities as defined are intended to serve as a general guideline for this position.  Associates may be asked to perform additional tasks depending on strengths and capabilities.*

Experience:
  1. A minimum of 5 years’ experience designing and developing microwave, analog, digital, and mixed-signal integrated circuits.
