What is an IAM associate?

IAM Associates, or Identity and Access Management Associates, are professionals who support the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of identity and access management systems within an organization. Their main responsibilities include managing user access rights, ensuring security policies are enforced, and assisting with user provisioning and de-provisioning. IAM Associates work closely with IT and security teams to protect sensitive information and ensure that only authorized individuals have access to specific systems or data. They also help troubleshoot access issues and participate in audits to maintain compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.

How does an IAM associate typically collaborate with other IT and security teams within an organization?

As an IAM Associate, you will regularly work alongside IT, cybersecurity, and compliance teams to manage user access and maintain secure authentication processes. Collaboration often involves coordinating on access requests, troubleshooting authentication issues, and participating in audits or security reviews. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to interpret and implement security policies in collaboration with other departments. Effective teamwork ensures that identity and access management aligns with overall organizational security goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IAM associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IAM Associate, you need a solid understanding of identity and access management principles, cybersecurity fundamentals, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with IAM tools such as Okta, Microsoft Azure AD, or SailPoint, as well as relevant certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Certified Identity and Access Manager (CIAM), is highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure secure and efficient access control, protecting organizational data and supporting regulatory compliance.

Clearance Requirement: U.S. Citizenship required with the ability to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance

Strategic Business Systems (SBS) is a National Information Technology Services company providing infrastructure design, integration, engineering, and operational support to commercial and Federal Government customers.

We have an exciting opportunity for an AWS DevOps Engineer to join our growing cloud engineering team in Chantilly, VA. This position will support the development, automation, deployment, and operation of secure AWS cloud environments supporting U.S. Government missions.

The AWS DevOps Engineer will work with SBS's COSMOS platform, which enables mission owners to rapidly onboard and deploy AWS Impact Level (IL)-4/5 workloads while meeting Federal security and compliance requirements.

This is a hands-on engineering position for someone with a strong foundation in AWS who wants to work across cloud infrastructure, DevOps automation, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, containerization, and cloud-native application deployment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently on technical tasks while collaborating with senior cloud architects, developers, and security engineers on larger platform initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Build, deploy, configure, and maintain secure AWS cloud infrastructure supporting mission-critical applications and services.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, and/or Terraform.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate application builds, testing, infrastructure provisioning, and deployments.
  • Support the deployment and operation of cloud-native and serverless applications utilizing AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, S3, SQS, and other AWS services.
  • Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot containerized workloads and supporting AWS infrastructure.
  • Support cloud-hosted databases including Amazon RDS PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.
  • Automate common infrastructure, deployment, configuration, and operational tasks using scripting and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Implement and maintain cloud monitoring, logging, and alerting utilizing AWS CloudWatch and related services.
  • Configure and support AWS IAM, Secrets Manager, Systems Manager, and other security services following least-privilege and cloud security best practices.
  • Troubleshoot application, infrastructure, networking, deployment, and cloud service issues across development and production environments.
  • Work with Git-based development workflows, including branching, pull requests, code reviews, and automated deployments.
  • Collaborate with security teams to implement cloud security controls and support Federal security and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, deployment procedures, architecture diagrams, and operational runbooks.
  • Participate in Agile development processes, technical planning, peer reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Evaluate new AWS services, DevOps tools, and automation capabilities that can improve platform reliability, security, and deployment velocity.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 2-5 years of experience in DevOps, cloud engineering, systems engineering, software development, or a related technical discipline.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and supporting workloads in AWS.
  • Experience with core AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, IAM, API Gateway, and CloudWatch.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using AWS CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar technologies.
  • Experience building, maintaining, or supporting CI/CD pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of Git and modern source-control practices.
  • Understanding of cloud networking concepts, including VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, and load balancing.
  • Understanding of REST APIs, databases, and modern application architectures.
  • Experience troubleshooting cloud infrastructure and application deployment issues.
  • Understanding of cloud security principles, IAM, secrets management, and least-privilege access.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a collaborative engineering team.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Ability to work onsite in Chantilly, VA.
Preferred Qualifications
  • AWS certification such as AWS Certified Developer - Associate, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, and/or Amazon EKS.
  • Experience with AWS CDK and TypeScript.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and SQL.
  • Familiarity with AWS Systems Manager, Secrets Manager, CloudWatch, and other AWS operational services.
  • Experience working with serverless and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience supporting automated security scanning within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and integrating security into the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience supporting highly available, scalable AWS environments.
  • Exposure to AWS GovCloud or Federal Government cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with Federal cloud security and compliance requirements.
