Job description

About HYBE America

HYBE America is part of HYBE, a global leader at the intersection of music, entertainment, and technology. We represent some of the world’s most influential artists and continue to expand our creative and cultural impact across the Americas. At HYBE, we believe in the power of music and foster a culture built on Passion, Trust, and Autonomy.

Position Overview

HYBE America is seeking a driven Director, Business & Legal Affairs with 5-7 years of experience to join our Business & Legal Affairs team in Santa Monica. In this role, you will handle a wide variety of responsibilities, from drafting complex recording, distribution, and publishing agreements to advising on brand partnerships and intellectual property strategy. Working closely with creative, digital, and executive teams, you will serve as a strategic legal advisor ensuring our artists and business operations are protected while pushing creative boundaries in the evolving music landscape.

This is a full-time, hybrid role based in our Santa Monica office, with in-person collaboration 3 days per week and remote work 2 days per week. Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the greater Los Angeles area at their own expense prior to their start date — we are not offering relocation assistance for this role, though it may be considered on a case-by-case basis for select candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, negotiate, and structure transactional music agreements, including recording, distribution, publishing, synchronization, artist management, live touring, and brand partnership deals.
  • Counsel internal creative, marketing, digital, and A&R teams on intellectual property, copyright clearance, trademark enforcement, and right-of-publicity matters.
  • Support strategic business growth by assisting the General Counsel and team with corporate governance, vendor contracts, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation across all entertainment ventures.
  • Manage contract administration, track option dates, and oversee rights tracking across domestic and international catalog catalogs.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the California State Bar.
  • 5-7 years of transactional legal experience specializing in the music and entertainment industry, gained at a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel at a music label, publisher, or entertainment company.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. copyright law, music licensing, digital distribution frameworks, and contract negotiation.
  • Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills, with a track record of translating complex legal concepts into clear, actionable business advice.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently manage multiple fast-moving, high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior litigation experience—particularly in copyright, intellectual property, or contract disputes—or experience managing outside counsel during active disputes is a strong plus.

Don't match every skill listed? Almost nobody does! Think you're a good fit anyway? Please let us know.

Salary Range

The salary range for this job is $145,000 to $165,000. This is a good faith effort at the time of posting. This range is base salary only and does not include benefits and any other compensatory components of the role.
