HVAC/R Technician

Position Summary

We are looking to fill an immediate opening for a full-time HVAC/R Technician supporting a federal facilities engineering program.

The HVAC/R Technician will focus on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment across all systems. The selected candidate will demonstrate strong HVAC technical expertise and be multi-skilled in related trades including Electrical, Piping/Plumbing, and Central Utility Plant Operations to successfully complete daily and weekly work assignments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and monitoring repairs to Mechanical, Plumbing, Structural, Furniture, Fire, Life Safety, and Control systems to ensure systems meet applicable standards.
  • Maintain responsibility for facility services, preventative maintenance, purchasing and inventory control, contracted maintenance, general maintenance, and technical proficiency.
  • Clean, inspect, calibrate, and change parts to maintain HVAC systems and associated equipment at optimum performance levels.
  • Utilize tools, materials, and test equipment for installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning/refrigeration HVAC control systems.
  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC controls including pneumatic, electric, and electronic systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair HVAC/BAS control issues including dampers, coils, HVAC steam-related controls, air handling equipment, and all valve types.
  • Adjust and calibrate pneumatic and electronic devices to properly balance HVAC systems.
  • Inspect and service controls on a scheduled basis.
  • Respond to service calls and troubleshoot system issues.
  • Prepare repair and installation estimates for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing systems and provide repair recommendations.
  • Troubleshoot and test controls using test gauges, amp meters, hydro thermographs, and computers.
  • Perform manufacturer-required preventive and emergency repairs on HVAC equipment across all facility locations.
  • Service Electric-Only HVAC Systems.
  • Service Gas Boiler and Electric HVAC Systems.
  • Perform corrective maintenance in assigned programmatic areas.
  • Inspect and test equipment and systems to maintain technical integrity and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Review technical manuals to remain current with evolving technology and electrical safety codes.
  • Work extensively outdoors installing and maintaining a wide array of technical equipment.
  • Use ladders, safety equipment, and navigate rooftops and confined spaces as required.
  • Apply technical knowledge to perform routine tasks following detailed instructions.
  • Receive technical guidance from supervisor or higher-level technician as needed.
  • Complete work that is subject to spot-checking for accuracy.

Required Experience / Skills

  • Five (5) years of commercial HVAC/R journeyman-level experience.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate and interface with other technicians.
  • Experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), including SIEMENS DESIGO software and hardware.
  • Experience setting up and managing BAS schedules, set points, and alarms.
  • Experience with general Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) practices and procedures.
  • Must hold EPA Universal Level Certification per Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
  • Must hold one of the following certifications:
    • NATE Certification
    • HVAC Excellence Professional/Industry Certification
    • UA Star Mastery Certification
  • Capable of performing physical labor including walking, standing, lifting up to 40 pounds, pulling, climbing ladders, and demonstrating agility and dexterity.

Preferred Experience / Skills

  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible HVAC equipment installation, maintenance, and repair experience including:
    • One year of HVAC control maintenance and repair experience, and
    • Completion of an HVAC control training program applicable to system type
      OR
  • Completion of a four-year federally approved technical training program in HVAC installation, repair, and maintenance, plus:
    • Completion of an HVAC control training program applicable to system type, and
    • One year of HVAC control maintenance and repair experience.
  • Extensive factory training and field experience with associated HVAC equipment.
  • Qualification in preventive maintenance and servicing of HVAC equipment.

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of trade schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC.
  • Certification in RCM practices and procedures.
  • OSHA certification with training in proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Proficiency in brazing and soldering techniques.
  • Knowledgeable in sizing areas to determine proper BTU requirements for heating and cooling systems.

  • Positions require Government background screening and clearance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation: $75,000 - $77,500
  • Health & Wellness Benefit: $18,000
