Job description

The University of Virginia's Facilities Management has an exciting opportunity for a HVAC Professional, which supports Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost-effective, reliable HVAC and maintenance to the University community. The position will be filled either as an HVAC Mechanic or HVAC Senior Assistant level depending on the credentials and experience of the finalist selected.
HVAC Senior Assistants support HVAC Mechanics with HVAC repairs and works independently as appropriate, cleans job sites, trains on more advanced installations and emergency repairs, and follows all customer service and safety protocols. The incumbent hired at this level will be considered for promotion once they have attained the required experience and licensure for the next level. A valid driver's license, with a positive points balance is also required.
HVAC Mechanics performs journey level installation, repair, and maintenance on a variety of package and central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Other duties include preventive maintenance; servicing, overhauling, and maintaining a variety of large central units; and determining equipment needs. HVAC Mechanics receives job assignments from a supervisor, however most work is performed with little supervision.

HVAC Senior Assistant Duties Include:
  • Perform HVAC repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Develop an increasing knowledge of types of material and equipment used for the various utility systems involved in University projects.
  • Maintain accurate records on time tickets, job requests, and work orders.
  • Determine material and equipment for specific jobs, as well as initiate purchase orders.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Use personal safety equipment as instructed, and act in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Meet with and respond to customer requests on work status in coordination with supervisor.

HVAC Mechanic Duties Include:
  • Perform HVAC installation and repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Specify, estimate, and install equipment, refrigeration, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
  • Respond to emergency requests.
  • Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code.
  • Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Train and oversee Assistant and Apprentice work.

Required Qualifications for HVAC Senior Assistant:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Four years of experience in a relevant trade.
  • License: Valid Driver's license.

Required Qualifications for HVAC Mechanic:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Four years of experience in the HVAC trade.
  • Licensure: Journeyman or higher HVAC license; Valid Driver's license.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.
Compensation:
  • HVAC Senior Assistant: $21.00 to $25.00 per hour ($43,680 to $52,000 Annually)
  • HVAC Mechanic: $24.50 to $30.00 per hour ($50,960 to $62,400 Annually)

Physical Demands:
