What is an HVAC apprentice?

HVAC apprentices are entry-level workers who are learning the skills necessary to install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They work under the supervision of experienced HVAC technicians or journeymen, gaining hands-on experience while also studying technical knowledge, often through a formal apprenticeship program. This role is essential for developing the foundational skills and certifications needed to become a licensed HVAC technician.

What does an HVAC apprentice do?

As an HVAC apprentice, your job is to learn about heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. This typically takes the form of working part-time while attending training at a local accredited program for the HVAC trade, but some companies provide all training internally if their systems are unique enough. In some locations, the apprenticeship is split into different levels based on your existing skills. This job involves learning how HVAC systems are installed and repaired in each type of building, which mechanical skills are necessary to install, repair, and remove these temperature systems, and how to identify operational concerns like facility damage or faulty alarms. HVAC apprentices often manage and operate equipment and work under the supervision of a journeyman or senior-level employee.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HVAC Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of mechanical systems, strong math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and HVAC-specific instruments, as well as OSHA safety certifications, is typically required. Dependability, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure apprentices can safely assist in installations and repairs while building the technical expertise and professionalism needed for career advancement.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect as an HVAC apprentice, and how does this support my development in the trade?

As an HVAC Apprentice, you'll gain extensive hands-on experience by assisting with installations, maintenance, and repairs of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems under the supervision of licensed technicians. You'll regularly work with a variety of tools, learn to diagnose system issues, and help with tasks such as ductwork, wiring, and equipment calibration. This practical exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand safety standards and industry best practices. The diverse tasks and real-world problem-solving you'll encounter are essential for progressing toward journeyman status and future independent work.

Job description

Description

Why Edelman?

Are you the kind of leader who doesn't wait to be told what's broken - you already know, and you're already fixing it? At Edelman, we're not just running HVAC calls; we're building a department that sets the standard for the trade. We're looking for an HVAC Manager to run department operations across our Illinois and Wisconsin locations, develop the next generation of technicians, and own the numbers behind the work. If you're ready to lead a department instead of just working in one, this is your seat.

What You'll Do:

Own the Department: Take full ownership of HVAC service and installation operations - residential and commercial - across our Illinois and Wisconsin locations.

Lead the Team: Manage technician scheduling, performance, and development, and build a bench of technicians who do the job right the first time.

Protect Quality: Hold every job to the Edelman standard - proper installs, honest diagnostics, no shortcuts.

Own the Numbers: Manage job costing, estimates, and margin accountability for the department - this is your P&L to run.

Solve Problems Before They Escalate: When something goes sideways on a job site, you're the one who fixes it and keeps the customer's trust intact.

Set the Standard for Safety and Compliance: Enforce safety protocols, EPA refrigerant compliance (Section 608), and code requirements without exception.

What We're Looking For:

Experience: Proven leadership experience managing residential and/or commercial HVAC operations.

Certifications: EPA Section 608 Certification required.

Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of HVAC systems, codes, and refrigerant handling - you can walk a job site and know within minutes if it was done right.

Mindset: You're Solutions Driven and Humbly Confident - a leader who takes ownership without needing to be the loudest person in the room.

Business Acumen: Comfortable owning job costing, scheduling, and margin accountability, not just technical oversight.

Dependability: A valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and the willingness to support multiple locations across our Illinois and Wisconsin service area as needed.

What Edelman Offers:

Compensation: $100,000-$130,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Time Off: Paid time off, accrued in compliance with the Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act.

The Loyalty Program: We think long-term. Our loyalty program runs for 50 years-the longer you stay, the more you earn.

Total Protection: Health insurance (we cover a portion!), Vision, Dental, and a $25,000 Life Insurance policy at no cost to you.

Future Focus: 401k through Vanguard with a 4% company match.

The Perks: Access to "Access Perks" for discounts on travel, food, and shopping, plus voluntary benefits like Short-Term Disability.

Growth: A real path to grow with us as Edelman scales toward $100 million and beyond.

Ready to Lead?

If you're ready to run a department instead of just working in one, we want to talk. Apply today and start building a career - and a team - you can be proud of.
