The Position
Applications are now being accepted for a position of Assistant Professor, Humanities, beginning Spring 2027 (January 25, 2027) at San Diego City College. While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
Major Responsibilities
Reporting to the Dean of Arts, Humanities, Communication, & Telecommunication, the incumbent would be a member of the English department teaching primarily Humanities courses, serving on and/or chairing department and campus committees, maintaining appropriate records and reports, and participating actively in the work of the department, college, and district. The college encourages and supports professional growth, with an emphasis on equity-minded and student-centered practices, consistent with the mission of the college.
Qualifications
Master's in humanities OR the equivalent
Desired Qualifications
- Ability and desire to effectively teach lower and upper division course levels to community college students inclasses both on and off campus and consisting of native and non-native speakers of English.
- Ability and desire to effectively teach in a range of modalities including face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online.
- Experience teaching special populations and working in programs such as College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) for high schools, justice-impacted, veterans, AAPI, Puente, Umoja, etc.
- Ability to create effective lessons incorporating innovative and current andragogy, instruction, methodologies, and technology.
- Ability and desire to assume department leadership in areas including but not limited to course or program level coordination, curriculum, professional development, and instructional support and resources.
- Ability and desire to assume some District and/or college program coordination.
- Commitment to and participation in ongoing professional learning.
- Ability and willingness to use research for innovation in the classroom.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience working with students from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds; sexual orientation and gender expression; different levels of academic preparation; and varying physical and learning abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively and navigate conflict or disagreements with students, Classified Professionals, faculty, and administrators.
- Demonstrates cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Working Conditions
Each assignment will be for 15 class hours per week, and may include day, evening and Saturday classes. Additional responsibilities of City College tenured/tenure-track faculty include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement, curriculum review and development, serving on College and District committees, and participating in various departmental and college activities.

Conditions of Employment:
SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT:
- Submit "official" transcripts as stated on application (From all institutions listed in the online application);
- Provide a Tuberculosis Clearance Certificate for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment);
- Verification of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles is required for employment in child development centers per California Senate Bill 792, and must be received before assignment start date;
- Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the District's expense (Clearance must be received prior to first day of employment);
- Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States as required by the I9 Employment Eligibility Verification form; AND,
- Attend a new hire processing appointment in People, Culture, and Technology Services located at the District Administrative Offices.
EMPLOYMENT AFTER RETIREMENT
If you accept a contract (permanent) position with SDCCD and are a retired annuitant with CalPERS or CalSTRS, you must reinstate from your retirement system. Please reference the or website for further information.
