The Center for Humanities and Technology (CHaT) is an NEH-funded research center whose mission is to support interdisciplinary humanities research on AI and emerging technologies. CHaT brings together faculty across the College of Arts and Sciences and works closely with two partner centers: the Cincinnati Ethics Center (CEC) and the Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS). CEC is a community-facing ethics center that works throughout the Greater Cincinnati region foster the reasoning, civil dialogue, and decision-making skills essential for resolving the ethical, political, and social challenges we face. PEWS is a community-facing center that strives to expand and enrich the interface between science and the public to benefit all stakeholders. Together, these three centers share a collaborative set of projects around public engagement with AI, science, and ethics. The Fellow will be housed in CHaT and will divide their time approximately equally among research, public engagement with AI, and supporting operations and programming.
We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in AI Ethics, to begin August 2026. We seek an applicant whose research addresses the ethical and societal implications of AI, with a demonstrated interest in public engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewel. The position is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences through the A&S Action Collaborative.
The Fellow’s primary responsibilities are:
- pursuing independent or collaborative research aligned with CHaT’s core themes of AI explainability, ethics, and trustworthiness;
- providing assistance to all three centers with their public engagement work particularly as it relates to public engagement with AI;
- helping cultivate interdisciplinary connections across the College of Arts and Sciences.
Additional responsibilities, shaped by the Fellow’s research profile and abilities, may include:
- Contributing to CHaT’s programming, including our annual conference, speaker series, or existing research projects, and supporting public engagement initiatives in collaboration with CHaT;
- Supporting The Cincinnati Ethics Center’s ethics of AI engagement work;
- Supporting PEWS public engagement programming.
The Fellow will report to the Director of CHaT, Dr. André Curtis-Trudel (Department of Philosophy), and will join an active research community with opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and professional development.
Candidates must hold a PhD in philosophy or a closely related field.
Doctoral Degree in the appropriate field or discipline, or the recognized terminal degree
- In-depth knowledge of specialized field, process or discipline.
- May require experience with specialized software programs.
We are particularly interested in applicants whose research profile complements CHaT’s current thematic focus on explainable, ethical, and trustworthy AI. Demonstrated experience or interest in public engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration is an asset.
