What are Human Robots?

Human robots, often referred to as humanoid robots, are robots designed to resemble and mimic human appearance and behavior. They are equipped with artificial intelligence and mechanical systems that allow them to perform tasks such as walking, talking, facial expressions, and interacting with people. These robots are used in various fields, including healthcare, customer service, and research, to assist, entertain, or collaborate with humans. The goal is to create machines that can safely and effectively work alongside people in everyday environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in human-robot collaboration roles?

Professionals in human-robot collaboration roles often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless communication between human team members and robotic systems, adapting to rapidly evolving technology, and maintaining safety protocols. Balancing the technical requirements of programming and operating robots with the need to foster effective teamwork is also a frequent hurdle. Additionally, troubleshooting unexpected behaviors or errors in robotic systems and continuously updating skills to keep pace with industry advancements are common aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, often supported by a relevant degree such as robotics, mechatronics, or computer science. Proficiency with CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and familiarity with control systems and embedded platforms is essential. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork skills help individuals excel in designing and refining robotic systems. These competencies are crucial for developing innovative, reliable robots that meet real-world needs and function effectively in diverse environments.

What is the difference between Human Robot vs Robotics Technician?

AspectHuman RobotRobotics Technician
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in robotics, engineering, or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's in robotics, electronics, or mechanical engineering
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, research labs, automation facilitiesIndustrial settings, maintenance workshops, manufacturing floors
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in automation, research, and development sectorsEmployers include manufacturing companies, automation firms, and tech companies

While a Human Robot refers to an advanced humanoid or AI-driven automation system, a Robotics Technician is a professional who maintains, repairs, and installs robotic systems. Both roles are integral to automation industries, but the Human Robot is a product or system, whereas the Robotics Technician is a skilled worker supporting robotic operations.

Job description

FieldAI is transforming how robots interact with the real world. Our growing R&D team is based in Boston, where we develop risk-aware, reliable, field-ready AI systems that tackle the hardest problems in robotics and unlock the potential of embodied intelligence. We take a pragmatic approach that goes beyond off-the-shelf, purely data-driven methods or transformer-only architectures, combining cutting-edge research with real-world deployment. Our solutions are already deployed globally, and we continuously improve model performance through rapid iteration driven by real field use.

FieldAI is seeking a Software Engineer, Human-Robot Interaction. In this role, you'll shape how humans and robots communicate, collaborate, and build trust in real-world environments. From natural language dialogue systems to intuitive interaction paradigms, you'll design the interfaces that make our robots approachable, understandable, and effective partners for operators across diverse industries.

This position sits at the intersection of robotics, AI, and human factors. You'll work closely with both research and product teams, translating cutting-edge HRI insights into field-ready interaction systems that ship to customers. You'll leverage foundation models to push beyond conventional command-and-control interfaces, enabling rich, context-aware dialogue and adaptive robot behaviors. If you're energized by bridging research and deployment to solve ambitious problems in embodied intelligence, we want to hear from you.
What You Will Get To Do
  • Design & Build Human-Robot Interaction Systems
  • Architect and implement dialogue systems that enable natural, multimodal communication between operators and robots.
  • Develop interaction frameworks that adapt to user expertise levels, environmental context, and task requirements.
  • Create intuitive mechanisms for operators to understand robot intent, state, and decision-making.
  • Leverage Foundation Models for Intelligent Interaction
  • Integrate foundation models into HRI pipelines.
  • Design systems to improve the efficiency and performance of foundation models on edge.
  • Evaluate and iterate on model outputs to ensure safe, reliable, and contextually appropriate robot responses.
  • Bridge Research & Deployment
  • Translate HRI research insights into practical, field-deployable systems
  • Conduct user studies and field experiments to validate interaction designs
  • Build robust systems that perform reliably in unstructured, real-world environments
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines
  • Partner with perception, planning, and autonomy engineers to create cohesive human-robot experiences.
  • Work with product and UX teams to align interaction designs with user needs.
  • Collaborate with customers to develop bespoke HRI solutions and see your work deployed in the field.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience
  • Hands-on experience developing human-robot interaction systems, including dialogue systems, natural language interfaces, or multimodal interaction
  • Proficiency with foundation models and their integration into production software systems
  • Strong programming skills in Python and C++
  • Solid understanding of HRI principles, including user modeling, explainability, and trust calibration
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in fast-paced, interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to translate research ideas into practical, field-deployable systems
  • Excellent communication skills and a highly collaborative mindset
What Will Set You Apart
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Human-Robot Interaction, or a related field
  • Experience with robotics middleware for real-time systems
  • Publications in top-tier venues such as HRI, CHI, ICRA, RSS, CoRL, ACL, or EMNLP
  • Experience with speech recognition, natural language understanding, or dialogue management frameworks
  • Familiarity with user study design and evaluation methodologies
  • Contributions to open-source robotics or NLP projects
  • Personal or academic projects demonstrating creativity in human-robot or human-AI interaction
