About the AFN

The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.

The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.

Position Overview

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking an experienced Director to lead the Justice sector and support the advancement of First Nations-led approaches to justice, safety, and well-being. Reporting to the Senior Director, this role involves strategic leadership, planning, advocacy, and collaboration with internal teams and external partners to advance First Nations legal systems, community safety and prevention, and the implementation of the Calls for Justice (MMIWG) and the Calls to Action (TRC).

The Director will work collaboratively with First Nations leadership and partners to advance distinctions-based, rights-informed approaches that reflect First Nations laws, governance, and priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • First Nations Justice Systems and Legal Traditions: Support the recognition, revitalization, and implementation of First Nations laws, legal orders, and justice systems, including community-based and culturally grounded approaches.
  • Strategic Leadership:Develop and execute strategies that address First Nations' justice issues, ensuring alignment with AFN mandates.
  • Policy Development:Lead the development of
    policies and strategic advice that advance First Nations-led justice systems, community safety, and prevention, including addressing systemic barriers and the overrepresentation of First Nations in colonial justice systems.
  • Advocacy & Representation:Represent AFN in discussions with government agencies, collaborators, and partners to advocate for the rights and well-being of First Nations families.
  • Team Management:Lead and mentor a team of professionals, fostering a collaborative and effective work environment.
  • Collaboration:Work closely with other AFN sectors, the National Chief's Office, and external organizations to coordinate efforts and share best practices.
  • Communication:Prepare reports, briefing notes, and presentations to inform partners and support decision-making processes.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based with regular travel required for meetings, community engagement, and events.
  • Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate community needs and organizational priorities.

Who Can Apply:

  • Post-secondary education in Law, Indigenous Studies, Criminology, Public Policy, Governance, Social Sciences, or a related field of study. A combination of education, lived experience, and demonstrated knowledge of First Nations legal traditions and justice systems will be considered. Graduate-level education is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of First Nations legal orders, governance systems, and community-based approaches to justice, safety, and well-being is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years experience with First Nations politics and policies and 5 years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of justice issues in First Nation communities, including an understanding of relevant legislation and policies affecting First Nations.
  • Demonstrated superior writing skills.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with federal, provincial, territorial, northern, urban, and international governments and officials.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal & negotiation skills, management ability, leadership, teamwork, and judgement.
  • Diplomacy, tact, and decision-making ability.
  • Planning and organization skills.
  • English is the working language; however, knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) is an asset.

L'Assemblee des Premieres Nations (APN) est a la recherche d'une personne experimentee pour diriger le Secteur de la justice et promouvoir des approches menees par les Premieres Nations en matiere de justice, de securite et de bien-etre. Relevant du directeur ou de la directrice principal(e), le ou la titulaire du poste sera charge du leadership strategique, de la planification des activites, du plaidoyer et de la collaboration avec des equipes internes et des partenaires externes afin de promouvoir les systemes juridiques des Premieres Nations, la securite des communautes et la prevention ainsi que la mise en uvre des Appels a la justice (FFADA) et des Appels a l'action (CVR).


Le/la directeur/directrice travaillera en collaboration avec les dirigeants des Premieres Nations et les partenaires afin de promouvoir des approches fondees sur les distinctions et respectueuses des droits, qui tiennent compte des lois, de la gouvernance et des priorites des Premieres Nations.


Principales responsabilites

  • Systemes judiciaires et traditions juridiques des Premieres Nations : Favoriser la reconnaissance, la revitalisation et la mise en uvre des lois, des ordonnances juridiques et des systemes judiciaires des Premieres Nations, y compris les approches communautaires et ancrees dans la culture.
  • Leadership strategique : Elaborer et mettre en uvre des strategies qui traitent des questions de justice concernant les Premieres Nations, tout en veillant a leur conformite avec les mandats de l'APN.
  • Elaboration de politiques : Diriger l'elaboration de politiques et de recommandations strategiques visant a renforcer les systemes judiciaires diriges par les Premieres Nations, la securite communautaire et la prevention, notamment en s'attaquant aux obstacles systemiques et a la surrepresentation des Premieres Nations dans les systemes judiciaires coloniaux.
  • Plaidoyer et representation : Representer l'APN dans les discussions avec les organismes, collaborateurs et partenaires gouvernementaux pour defendre les droits et le bien-etre des familles des Premieres Nations.
  • Gestion d'equipe : Diriger et encadrer une equipe de professionnels, tout en favorisant un milieu de travail collaboratif et efficace.
  • Collaboration : Travailler en etroite collaboration avec les autres secteurs de l'APN, le bureau de la Cheffe nationale et des organisations externes afin de coordonner les efforts et d'echanger des pratiques exemplaires.

Qui peut postuler?

  • Etudes postsecondaires en droit, en etudes autochtones, en criminologie, en politiques publiques, en gouvernance, en sciences sociales ou dans un domaine connexe. Une combinaison d'etudes, d'experience pratique et de connaissances averees des traditions juridiques et des systemes judiciaires des Premieres Nations sera prise en compte. Une formation de niveau universitaire est un atout.
  • Une connaissance averee des ordonnances juridiques des Premieres Nations, de leurs systemes de gouvernance et de leurs approches communautaires en matiere de justice, de securite et de bien-etre est fortement souhaitee.
  • Au moins 7 annees d'experience dans le domaine de la politique et des politiques des Premieres Nations et 5 annees d'experience de travail a un poste de direction.
  • Connaissance et comprehension approfondies des questions de justice concernant les communautes des Premieres Nations, y compris une comprehension des lois et politiques pertinentes touchant les Premieres Nations.
  • Excellentes aptitudes en redaction.
  • Experience de travail averee avec les gouvernements et des fonctionnaires federaux, provinciaux, territoriaux, internationaux et de regions du Nord et urbaines.
  • Entregent, competences en negociation, capacites de gestion, leadership, esprit d'equipe et esprit de discernement superieurs et confirmes.
  • Diplomatie, tact et capacite de decision.
  • Competences en planification et capacites organisationnelles.
