What is a human resources management trainee?

Human Resources Management Trainees are entry-level professionals who are learning the fundamentals of HR operations within an organization. They typically rotate through different HR functions such as recruitment, employee relations, payroll, benefits administration, and training to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field. The goal is to prepare them for future roles as HR specialists or managers by providing practical experience and mentorship. Trainees often participate in structured development programs and receive ongoing feedback to build their skills. This role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals interested in pursuing a career in human resources.

What types of projects or assignments can a human resources management trainee expect during their training period?

As a Human Resources Management Trainee, you can anticipate being involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with recruitment and onboarding processes, supporting employee relations initiatives, and participating in the development of HR policies. Trainees often rotate through different HR functions—including benefits administration, compliance, and performance management—to gain a well-rounded understanding of the field. This exposure not only builds foundational skills but also helps identify areas of interest for future specialization. You’ll typically collaborate with experienced HR professionals and cross-functional teams, which is valuable for developing communication and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human resources management trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Resources Management Trainee, you need a solid understanding of HR fundamentals, organizational behavior, and typically a bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), recruiting platforms, and basic labor law certifications is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for supporting HR operations, ensuring compliance, and building positive workplace relationships.

Newark, DE • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement

Job description

Position Title: Senior HR Manager
Location: Newark, DE
Salary: $110,000 to $130,000
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
On-Site or Hybrid: On-site
Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
This is a hands-on operational leadership seat for an established organization of roughly 250 employees. You will develop and own an HR department overseeing payroll, benefits, compliance, talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, and much more.
It is a build-out tactical opportunity: the person in this seat will consolidate functions currently spread across other departments, own them at an operational level, and over time hire and lead a small team beneath them. Strong candidates will bring genuine payroll and benefits depth alongside the ability to manage talent and employee relations, not a purely generalist background.
Payroll Administration:
  • Oversee and audit bi-weekly payroll processing for approximately 250 employees
  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and proper controls across each pay cycle
  • Serve as escalation point for payroll questions and discrepancies

Benefits Administration:
  • Manage annual benefits renewals across health, dental, vision, and 401(k)
  • Lead Open Enrollment end to end, including employee communication and education
  • Guide employees through benefits options and act as the main point of contact for benefits questions

401(k) and Retirement:
  • Act as primary contact for the 401(k) broker
  • Ensure timely employee deferrals, employer matches, and accurate loan administration
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the retirement plan partner

Compliance and Reporting:
  • Maintain compliance with ACA, FMLA, ERISA, and applicable federal and state labor laws
  • Keep accurate, audit-ready records and support internal and external audits
  • Report on HR metrics to support decision-making

Talent Acquisition and Employee Relations:
  • Manage the recruitment and selection process across the organization
  • Oversee employee relations, addressing demands, grievances, and workplace concerns
  • Serve as a bridge between management and employees to support a positive work environment

Vendor and Broker Management:
  • Manage relationships with brokers, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators
  • Coordinate vendor deliverables, renewals, and service issues

Team Build-Out and Operations:
  • Oversee onboarding and support talent needs at an operational level
  • Hire, develop, and lead a payroll clerk and a benefits administration associate as the function grows
  • Bring structure and ownership to functions currently distributed across other teams

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of HR management experience with demonstrated depth in payroll and benefits administration
  • Strong working knowledge of compliance frameworks including ACA, FMLA, and ERISA
  • Proven experience managing vendors, brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators
  • Experience overseeing or auditing multi-cycle payroll for an organization of scale
  • Experience managing talent acquisition and employee relations
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to operate as a department head, not a sole processor
  • HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) preferred
  • Experience with Paychex is a plus

Why choose Addison Group?
  • Pay: We negotiate high salaries using the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Benefits & Bonuses: You are eligible for medical, dental, vision insurance benefits, and 401k.
  • Permanent Employment: Many of Addison's job openings lead to potential permanent employment.
  • Connections: You connect directly with hiring managers.
  • Options: You are presented multiple employment options near your home.
  • Professional Development: You are provided hiring process advice, resume revision, and employment term negotiation.
