What is a human factors job?

Human factors jobs may focus on engineering or ergonomics. You may work on physical ergonomics, which is the relationship between human anatomy and a product or process, or cognitive ergonomics, which focuses on things such as memory, perception, and motor responses. Organizational ergonomics is concerned with procedures and the use of systems and technology to complete tasks or organize. A human factors engineer or ergonomist designs products, processes, and facilities that improve the way that people interact with technology. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human factors specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Factors Specialist, you need a background in psychology, engineering, or human-computer interaction, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in user-centered design. Familiarity with usability testing tools, data analysis software, and systems like MATLAB or UX research platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate findings effectively with multidisciplinary teams distinguish top performers.
