Job description

Hum was founded in 2019 to make rail transportation safer and smarter. Our products provide railroads, rail shippers, and railcar owners with the most advanced sensors for application like predictive railcar maintenance, live railcar weights as accurate as a scale, and next generation fleet monitoring tools.

Hum is now entering a growth phase as it seeks to meet the needs of its customers across multiple continents. Hum is looking for the right people to join our team as we work to create incredible products that modernize rail transportation.

Hum is hiring a Full Stack Engineer to lead our scaling efforts. As an early hire at Hum, this role comes with the opportunity to lead our frontend team as we build it out or continue on as an individual contributor. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity for the right person.

What youโ€™ll be doing

System Architect โ€“ Hum is growing rapidly and needs its internal systems ready to meet the needs of our growing customer list. Youโ€™ll have the opportunity to lead application and systems development to fuel our growth without sacrificing product quality.

Bestโ€‘Inโ€‘Class Engineering โ€“ Hum aims to be the premier engineering firm in the transportation telematics space. Our customers come to us to solve their challenges because our depth of expertise far surpasses anything our competitors can do. We donโ€™t cut corners. Weโ€™re not building products for the Walmart bargain bin. Weโ€™re building bestโ€‘inโ€‘class hardware and software that pushes the envelope on whatโ€™s possible.

What weโ€™re looking for
  • Fundamental Thinkers โ€“ No situation is the same and no two projects or customers are alike. We start from basic principles of physics and mechanics to engineer bestโ€‘inโ€‘class products.
  • MacGuyver Genes โ€“ Thereโ€™s no book with answers in the back to solve our customersโ€™ challenges. Our team of engineers are experts in resourcefulness and creativity to unlock the best path forward.
  • Never Satisfied โ€“ Thereโ€™s always something more to improve. Even after we deliver for our customers, weโ€™re constantly integrating the latest technology developments to get better every day.
Responsibilities
  • Architect and lead the development of bestโ€‘inโ€‘class full stack systems spanning backend services and customerโ€‘facing applications.
  • Build and deploy intuitive applications across web and mobile environments using Next.js.
  • Design and operate the data and API layer on Supabase (Postgres, auth, storage, and realโ€‘time), keeping it reliable as the customer base scales.
  • Implement best practices for device, application, and system cybersecurity.
  • Keep up on the latest advancements in the field and incorporate them into Hum's systems.
  • 5+ years of professional full stack development experience, ideally building and shipping web applications end to end.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with Supabase, including Postgres schema design, rowโ€‘level security, auth, storage, and realโ€‘time subscriptions.
  • Solid understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and modern styling tools (e.g., Tailwind, Styled Components), with an eye for translating wireframes and prototypes into polished interfaces.
  • Strong backend fundamentals: building reliable APIs (REST and GraphQL) and working knowledge of languages such as Python, Node.js, or Go.
  • Familiarity with containerization and deployment tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with ORM frameworks, such as TypeORM.
  • Strong SQL skills, including schema design, stored procedures, and query optimization.
  • Exposure to realโ€‘time data handling (e.g., WebSockets) and IoTโ€‘related projects.
  • Proven experience deploying and operating cloud applications (AWS, Azure, or similar), with familiarity with DevOps practices (CI/CD, Docker) a plus.
  • Comfort with version control (Git), agile workflows, and configuration management practices.

This position is located in Austin, TX.

Candidate must be a US citizen or authorized to work in the United States.
