Faculty Positions in Virology
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) Department of Microbiology invites applications from outstanding scientists seeking an Assistant Professor faculty position in virology. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program and contribute to graduate and medical school teaching. Successful candidates will be appointed as an Assistant Professor on the tenure track and receive highly competitive compensation and startup package.
We seek outstanding candidates who plan to employ state of the art approaches to investigate all aspects of virus biology, molecular mechanisms of virus replication, virus-host interaction, cancer virology, contributing critical insights on virus disease and host-pathogen interactions. Successful candidates will complement and expand our existing research strengths in virology, as well as other departmental research programs in microbiology, immunology, cancer, and structural biology. Our department has a highly collaborative culture and new faculty are encouraged to participate in many strong UAB research centers including the Center for AIDS Research, the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, the Comprehensive Diabetes Center, the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Center, the UAB-HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the Center for Integrative Structural Biology. The Department also has a long history of promoting scientific and teaching excellence.
The UAB HSOM main campus is in Birmingham, Alabama. With more than 1,700 full-time faculty and almost 2,000 medical and graduate students, the HSOM ranks 21st nationally in NIH research funding and in the top 8 for all public institutions in the US. UAB was named the Best Large Employer by Forbes in 2021. Driven by an intensely collaborative and entrepreneurial character, UAB is one of the leading economic engines of the State, with a nearly $4 billion budget and a statewide economic impact exceeding $7 billion annually. Birmingham is a cosmopolitan city at the heart of a metropolitan area with a population of 1.1 million people.
