INSTITUTE OVERVIEW

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is a nonprofit organization for genomic science and applications with locations in Huntsville and Dothan, Alabama. It is a high-volume genomic data producer and a global scientific collaborator valued for genomic data analysis and interpretation to solve questions in cancer, undiagnosed disease, neurological disorders, agriculture, and more. Its unique campuses cross the boundaries between scientists, educators, and commercial businesses to spark innovation and growth.

DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY

Educational Outreach is an essential component of the HudsonAlpha mission. The Institute seeks to expand interest in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematical fields by developing instructional programs that spark curiosity among students and allow teachers to illustrate the potential of applied research. The Educational Outreach programs of HudsonAlpha are organized around two guiding principles: preparing the future biotechnology workforce and cultivating an awareness of the influence of genetics and biotechnology on the lives of all citizens.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Student Experiences Specialist develops and delivers educational programs in life science and biotechnology to K-12 student audiences. Activities and content are provided through engaging, hands-on experiences designed to introduce genomics and/or biotechnology content and lab skills. The Student Experiences Specialist will support planning, coordination, and delivery of student education and workforce development programs, including academic year field trips and summer programs. The Student Experiences Specialist will engage with students, educators, and community groups as a member of HudsonAlpha's Educational Outreach team.

EDUCATION AND REQUIRED SKILLS EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience:

โ— Bachelor's degree in Education, Biology, or another related field

โ— Valid Alabama teaching certificate preferred

โ— Prior experience as a classroom educator is preferred

โ— Prior experience in managing a BSL-1 lab preferred

Required Skills:

โ— Working knowledge of genetics/genomics/biotechnology concepts

โ— Proficiency in molecular biology lab skills

โ— Proficient with common technology applications and their use

โ— Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

โ— Strong presentation skills, both the crafting and presenting content, to large and small audiences of varying types

โ— Ability to identify and address gaps in pedagogy and content

โ— Upon employment, maintain an Alabama educator certification

โ— Maintain a valid driver's license
