What is a HUBZone job?

A HUBZone job is a position with a company that participates in the Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) program, a federal initiative designed to promote economic growth in disadvantaged areas. These jobs are typically offered by businesses that have been certified by the Small Business Administration (SBA) as HUBZone employers. The program provides federal contracting advantages to these businesses, encouraging them to hire employees who live in HUBZone-designated areas.

Is 'Hubzone' recognized as a specific job title or occupation?

No, 'Hubzone' is not a standard job title but refers to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s HUBZone (Historically Underutilized Business Zone) program. This program supports the growth of small businesses in economically disadvantaged areas by providing federal contracting opportunities. If you are seeking jobs related to government contracting or economic development, you may want to search for roles such as HUBZone Program Manager, Grant Administrator, or Compliance Specialist. These related job titles have distinct responsibilities, skills, and career paths.

How do you qualify for HUBZone?

To qualify for a HUBZone designation, a business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by U.S. citizens, have its principal office located within a designated HUBZone, and maintain at least 35% of its employees residing in HUBZone areas. Additionally, the business must meet size standards set by the Small Business Administration and demonstrate good character and financial stability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hubzone position, and why are they important?

The job title 'Hubzone' is not recognized as a specific professional occupation; instead, HUBZone typically refers to the Small Business Administration's Historically Underutilized Business Zone program, which certifies and supports small businesses in designated areas. There are no technical tools, certifications, or systems tied specifically to a 'Hubzone' job role outside the context of program eligibility and compliance. As such, soft skills or qualifications directly for a 'Hubzone' position are not applicable. Therefore, relevant professional qualifications or responsibilities cannot be provided for this title.

Job description

Job Description: Senior Quantum Readiness & Cryptography Engineer
Location: Washington D.C. Area
Employment Type: Full-TimeAbout SERVISS
SERVISS LLC is a HUBZone-certified cybersecurity and mission engineering firm delivering transformative cyber solutions for federal, defense, and intelligence customers. We partner with agencies to solve tomorrow's toughest problems today, whether that's advancing cyber-asset visibility, driving cryptographic modernization, or engineering readiness for the post-quantum era. SERVISS engineers operate at the intersection of strategy, risk management, and cutting-edge defensive technologies to secure complex mission systems against emerging threats.
Position Summary
SERVISS is seeking a Senior Quantum Readiness & Cryptography Engineer to lead the strategy, architecture, implementation, and operational readiness for quantum-resilient cryptographic systems and programs. This technical leader will collaborate with cross-functional teams, government stakeholders, and engineering partners to advance quantum transition initiatives, post-quantum cryptographic standards adoption, and cryptographic inventory automation across enterprise environments. Successful candidates will blend deep cybersecurity systems engineering experience with practical understanding of quantum-era readiness frameworks and cryptographic lifecycle management. This role is hybrid and will require some on-site work at a federal agency with opportunities to also perform remote.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead enterprise-wide quantum readiness programs and cryptographic modernization efforts
  • Define and execute engineering strategies for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) transition
  • Build and operationalize automated cryptographic discovery, inventory, and risk analysis capabilities
  • Evaluate tools and technologies for cryptographic inventory, quantum-safe algorithms, and crypto-agile architectures
  • Interface with stakeholders to translate mission needs into secure, scalable engineering designs
  • Develop system architecture, migration roadmaps, and engineering artifacts for PQC deployments
  • Integrate quantum readiness outputs into governance, risk, and compliance reporting and tooling
  • Mentor and coach mid-level engineers to grow capabilities in cryptographic engineering and quantum risk management
  • Support audit, compliance, and continuous monitoring efforts for cryptographic controls and lifecycle management
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of progressive cybersecurity systems engineering experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in cryptographic engineering, algorithm transition planning, and large-scale security programs
  • Understanding of emerging quantum threats and "harvest now, decrypt later" risk models
  • Hands-on experience with cryptographic discovery, inventory, or analysis platforms
  • Proficiency with post-quantum cryptography standards and migration paradigms
  • Strong background in PKI, key lifecycle management, and secure protocol engineering
  • Experience translating security requirements into systems architecture in federal/CIO environments
  • Familiarity with NIST, NSA, or equivalent standards driving quantum-resilient cryptography
  • Proven ability to develop engineering documentation, technical roadmaps, and operational playbooks
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, or related field
  • Prior experience with federal PQC readiness or mandatory federal timelines (e.g., M-23-02)
  • Experience with automation and scripting for cryptographic discovery and governance (Python, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Technical certifications such as CISSP, CSSLP, or vendor-specific crypto/security credentials
Freedom to Thrive.
Why Join SERVISS? Our goal as an employer is simple yet profound: to create an environment where you can be your best self, pursue your passions, and enjoy the freedom to thrive both personally and professionally. Your success is our success, and we're committed to supporting you every step of the way.
  • Be part of an exciting company with ground floor opportunities to include equity
  • Highly competitive compensation and best in class benefits
  • 100% of medical, vision, dental, and life insurance premiums paid for by SERVISS
  • Opportunities for annual performance bonuses, growth incentives, and profit-sharing
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 6% dollar for dollar match
Additional Considerations for HUBZone applicants:
Preference may be given to applicants residing in a federal HUBZone in support of SERVISS LLC's HUBZone workforce objectives; all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
How to Determine HUBZone Residency:
Candidates can verify HUBZone eligibility by entering their home address into the SBA HUBZone Map at https://maps.certify.sba.gov/hubzone/map. If your residence falls within a designated HUBZone area on the map, you are considered a HUBZone resident for hiring preference purposes.
