JOB DESCRIPTION

This position provides specialized, as-needed nursing services for students with tracheostomies, ventilators, and other complex medical needs to ensure their safe participation in the educational environment. This position is PRN when current assigned nurse is unavailable. Responsibilities include assessing, monitoring, and managing students' health needs; providing direct skilled nursing care; responding to medical emergencies; collaborating with families, healthcare providers, and school personnel; and supporting individualized health care plans. The nurse's role is to maximize student health, safety, and well-being, reduce health-related barriers to learning, and enable students with complex medical needs to access and participate in their educational program as safely and independently as possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide direct skilled nursing care for students with tracheostomies, ventilators, and other complex medical needs in accordance with physician orders, district policies, and state nursing standards.

• Assess, monitor, and document students' health status, recognizing changes in condition and initiating appropriate nursing interventions.

• Perform specialized nursing procedures including, but not limited to, tracheostomy care, suctioning, ventilator monitoring, oxygen administration, pulse oximetry, medication administration, enteral feeding, and other delegated medical procedures within the scope of licensure.

• Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies, implementing emergency protocols and coordinating with emergency medical services when necessary.

• Implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and other required health documentation in collaboration with school personnel, families, and healthcare providers.

• Collaborate with school nurse, parents/guardians, physicians, therapists, school administrators, teachers, and related service providers to support students' medical and educational needs.

• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential health records in compliance with district procedures and applicable state and federal laws, including HIPAA and FERPA.

• Ensure compliance with physician orders, nursing standards, district policies, and applicable federal and state regulations governing school health services.

• Monitor medical equipment and supplies, ensuring equipment is functioning properly and necessary supplies are available during assigned shifts.

• Promote a safe, healthy learning environment by identifying and addressing health-related barriers that may impact student participation.

• Exercise professional nursing judgment while working independently in assigned school settings and communicating significant concerns to appropriate personnel.

• Participate in required professional development, competency validation, and continuing education related to pediatric complex medical care, tracheostomy management, and mechanical ventilation.

• Maintain current licensure, certifications, and required competencies necessary to perform assigned duties.

• Perform other related duties as assigned consistent with the scope of the position.

During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.

The complex role of the school nurse demands, but is not limited to, an understanding and knowledge of:

• Community including community as a system.

• Applicable laws, regulations and standards pertaining to school nurse practice (Utah Nurse Practice Act and Rules).

• Current nursing research and theory and its application to daily practice.

In addition, the school nurse needs to have the ability to:

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and other professionals.

• Effectively and professionally communicate in both written and oral format.

• Identify community resources and agencies for students and staff.

• Effectively collaborate with other health care professionals and community resources.

• Utilize the computer in health-related searches, email communication, data collection, and formation of reports.

• Work independently and make timely nursing decisions.

• Maintain effective and appropriate nursing skills through continuing education.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

• Possess a valid current license to practice nursing in the State of Utah.

• Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check.

NOTE: The Administration reserves the right to require specific training for this position. However, depending upon the type and quality of prior work experience and availability of formal training programs, some exchanges can be made between training and experience.

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS ---Not limited to the following:

• • While performing the duties of this job, the PRN Nurse is regularly required to speak and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop; kneel, or crouch.

• Frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds or more and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

• Move around throughout school settings to talk to students, parents and staff.

• May occasionally work in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees.

• May occasionally walk on slippery or uneven surfaces

• Physical ability to perform the essential functions listed above with or without reasonable accommodation.
