Description & Requirements
BloombergNEF (BNEF) is seeking a talented, highly motivated individual to join our US power analysis team as a contractor. You're one of those people who have a passion for energy markets and you want to be at the edge of change in this exciting industry. You naturally form original opinions, and you have an exceptional ability to communicate these to your audience. Your quantitative skills are strong, and you love to analyze critically complex subjects. Teamwork is important to you, and you understand how healthy debates inform solid conclusions.
BNEF is a strategic research provider covering global commodity markets and the disruptive technologies driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our expert coverage assesses pathways for the power, transport, industry, buildings and agriculture sectors to adapt to the energy transition. We help commodity trading, corporate strategy, finance and policy professionals navigate change and generate opportunities.
Our Team:
You will be based in our New York office as part of the US power team for BNEF - the world's leading independent provider of analysis, tools, data and research to decision makers leading the future of energy. Our team of experts, spread across six continents, provides independent analysis and insight, working with the largest corporations across utilities and generation, oil & gas, equipment manufacturers, banking and finance, and government.
BNEF Team Ethos:
To succeed at BNEF we need people who can work in an independent manner and show initiative to develop their own viewpoints, yet be collaborative with colleagues. We don't rely on the status quo, we look for innovative yet pragmatic thinking that turns big ideas into real insights and impact. Working at BNEF sometimes feels chaotic; we need teams that are both dynamic and structured to generate the unique perspectives our clients really value. Our teams are diverse, creative, focused, and fun!
What You'll Do
  • Use Python, SQL, Excel and the Bloomberg Terminal to analyze US power-market data.
  • Clean, audit and maintain messy datasets, including hourly prices, load, generation and asset-level data.
  • Identify data-quality issues before they affect the analysis.
  • Build and improve repeatable workflows for charts, datasets, forecasts and written research.
  • Support power-price forecasting with a fundamentals-based view of load, supply, fuels, renewables, storage and retirements.
  • Analyze market behavior across US ISOs/RTOs, including DA/RT spreads, congestion, negative prices and seasonal volatility.
  • Model the economics of battery storage and other flexible assets.
  • Work in shared codebases and write code that other analysts can understand and reuse.
  • Turn quantitative analysis into clear, conclusion-led research for clients.

What We're Looking For
  • Strong Python and SQL skills, especially pandas-based analysis.
  • Comfort working with imperfect market data and documenting cleaning decisions.
  • A fundamentals-first understanding of power prices and market behavior.
  • Ability to explain price movements through load, generation mix, fuel costs, congestion, outages, weather and market design.
  • Familiarity with renewables and energy storage economics.
  • Experience building or supporting forecasts, models or repeatable analytical workflows.
  • Clear written communication for commercial and non-technical audiences.
  • Practical use of AI tools to speed up coding, analysis and drafting, with enough judgment to catch wrong outputs.
