Job description

DESCRIPTION Applications are available online beginning Tuesday, June 23, 2026, through 11:59 pm, Tuesday, July 7, 2026. SALARY INFORMATION: Grade I - $21.855-$29.868 Hourly Grade II - $24.096-$32.930 Hourly Grade III - $26.445-$35.802 Hourly VACANCY INFORMATION: This position is currently utilized in the Airport, Harbor, Long Beach Utilities, Public Works, and Parks, Recreation & Marine Departments. Current vacancies exist in the Public Works and Parks, Recreation & Marine departments

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Under supervision, operates and maintains various mechanized equipment used in construction, landscaping, and maintenance work; makes minor repairs and adjustments in the field; loads and unloads heavy objects; keeps records and reports operating conditions; observes safety regulations; performs construction work and manual labor as necessary; may supervise others in conjunction with duties; and performs other related duties as required. REQUIREMENTS TO FILE Candidates must meet the following requirements: One (1) year of paid, full-time equivalent experience in the safe and efficient operation of construction, landscaping, or public utilities maintenance type equipment such as articulated front wheel loader, skip loader, skid steer, dump truck, pick-up truck and trailer, root cutter, hydra hammer, three blade riding mower, street sweeper, etc., and adjustment and minor repair of such equipment. A valid motor vehicle operator's license *Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing

Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristic on the form. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call as required; Ability to respond to emergency calls within a thirty-minute timeframe and available to serve on a rotating emergency callout list may be required. Positions in the Harbor Department require employees to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) prior to completion of probation. Positions in the Airport Department require night, weekend, holiday and shift work and require employees to obtain an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) access badge and an Airfield Driving Permit prior to passing probation.

Some positions require a Class A or B motor vehicle operator's license or commercial operator's license with a tank endorsement prior to completion of probation. A valid motor vehicle operator's license and current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Class A or B motor vehicle operator's license is desirable for some positions.

Possession of a Class A or B Driver's Permit desirable for some positions in the Public Works Department. Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) or a Forklift certificate or Crane Operator certificate recognized by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) is highly desirable for some positions in the Harbor Department. Drought Tolerant Landscape experience is highly desirable for some positions in the Utilities Department.

Current knowledge of City Standard Plans and MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) is highly desirable for some positions in the Public Works Department. Performance examination will be conducted on applicant's choice of any 2 of the 4 categories of equipment listed below: Skip loader, front loader, skid steer, OR articulating loader Proof of a valid Class C driver's license is required at the performance examination Utility street sweeper Proof of a valid Class C driver's license is required at the performance examination Three blade riding mower Proof of a valid Class C driver's license is required at the performance examination Pick-up truck with trailer OR Medium dump truck with trailer Proof of a valid Class C driver's license is required for the Pick-up truck with trailer at the performance examination Proof of a valid Class A driver's license is required for the Medium dump truck with trailer at the performance examination A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination

Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted.

Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.

In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
