Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly talented Traction Power Engineer to join our New England Transit Group and can work out of one of our regional offices in New England. The qualified applicant must have knowledge of third rail systems and load flow study experience (performing load flow studies and analyzing them).

The primary role of this position is to prepare design drawings and documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, proposals, calculations, and studies associated with traction power system for electrified railways AC and DC. Will perform project work as well as serve as a technical leader.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Guide drafters/designers and less experienced engineers to prepare but not limited to single-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, emergency trip, grounding and lighting, selection of substation equipment, writing of substation equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling, test plans, field tests, reports, analysis, and technical studies for traction power systems

  • Perform protective relay settings and coordination studies

  • Perform grounding design, load flow, harmonic, power flow, voltage drop, protective relay settings and coordination and arc flash studies using specialized software

  • Recommend appropriate actions to ensure compliance with all client, local, state, and federal regulations including AREMA railway standards, the National Electric Code (NFPA 70), the National Electric Safety Code (IEEE C2), and other applicable US standards

  • Develop systemwide duct bank drawings by working in close coordination with respective system disciplines. Assist and provide working information to CAD for BIM clash detection.

  • Provide value engineering on traction power systems

  • Perform technical reviews of other team members' designs

  • Interface with other technical disciplines such as communications systems, overhead catenary/3rd rail, electrical, mechanical, structural, architectural, track and civil.

  • Work with Senior Traction Power Engineers

  • Design with constructability in mind throughout all steps of the design process

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS plus 6 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Professional Engineering License

  • Experience with traction power AC and DC High and Low Voltage systems including relaying, rectifier, distribution, and SCADA equipment

  • Extensive experience in the execution and task leadership for design calculations, plans development, specifications, and technical report writing

  • Experience and knowledge of AREMA and IEEE standards for Traction Power design

  • Experience working on large transit/railroad projects with Substations, 3rd rail and/or Overhead Contact distribution systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 15+ years of experience in Electrical/Traction Power design and construction of engineering projects

  • Experience with CTDOT, Metro-North, Amtrak, MBTA

  • Experience in design/build and other alternative delivery project

  • Familiar with AutoCAD and OpenRoads/OpenRail.

  • Experience writing technical papers and technical presentations

  • Experience with technical studies for traction power systems, including train performance simulations AC and DC load flow simulations, short circuit calculations, EMF/EMI studies

  • Leadership positions held on professional societies or technical committees

  • Experience in providing technical training

  • Experience in writing project proposals and delivery of oral presentations for purpose of business development

  • Experience with MBTA, CTDOT, Amtrak and Metro North.
