DATES: College Semesters (Fall)
HOURS: Flexible (generally 8 to 5, M - F) / Not to exceed 12 hours per week
JOB SUMMARY:
The College Station Police Department Internship is a structured, educational experience designed to provide exposure to law enforcement functions through supervised, project-based learning and observation. Activities are intended to support the intern's academic development and are not intended to replace the work of sworn or civilian personnel. It is available for qualified undergraduate or graduate student (criminal justice, forensics, psychology, sociology, or other related field) with an interest in learning about the Police Department and its various functions in law enforcement. The intern will assist in researching, gathering, analyzing, and reporting based on the needs of the division they are assigned to assist. The position reports overall to the Administrative Services Lieutenant but will have individual hosts within the agency. Some potential areas of assignment include the following: Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene, GIS Services, Victim Services, and Administration.
Principal Duties
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review source material for given parameters.
  • Conduct research as needed on topics provided.
  • Utilize department resources to complete law enforcement related projects.
  • Gather information from various resources as needed.
  • Compile and analyze information to provide a cohesive and comprehensive product.
  • Generate reports in the manner requested.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:
  • Must be receiving academic credit from an accredited college or university.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the Police Department.
  • Intermediate level of computer knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to utilize word processing and data entry programs.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Positive and supportive attitude with people of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Motivated, self-starter who takes the initiative to seek out tasks from staff.
  • Commitment to comply with confidentiality requirements and police policies.
  • Supportive of the mission of the College Station Police Department.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to make judgments based upon knowledge of department policies and procedures.
