Job description

Lifeguard Position

The city of Las Vegas Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs department invites applications for Lifeguard. This is an hourly level, part-time position. Scheduled hours for this position are limited to 19 hours or less per week (shift will vary based on the needs of the programs and facility). Hourly employees are also limited to 1,560 hours of work in any 12 month period. Receives general supervision from higher level supervisory or management staff. Pool locations include Municipal Pool, Pavilion Pool, Doolittle Pool, Garside Pool, Carlos L. Martinez & Darrio J. Hall Pool, and Baker Pool.

Interview process includes a 10-minute swim followed by a hiring interview. Candidates are required to pass a swim test which includes a swim/tread event and a skill drill. Each candidate receives only one attempt at each event. All physical tests are pass or fail.

Example of Duties
  • Safeguards pool and patrons
  • Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents
  • Administers First Aid
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards
  • Enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations
  • Provides general information on pool operation to patrons
  • May set up/take down equipment for program and/or special events
  • Maintains order and cleanliness in the pool and adjoining areas
  • Possible coaching
Minimum Requirements

Minimum 16 years of age. Note: Any candidate under 18yrs old must have an adult present to complete the processing if selected. Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Bilingual skills are desirable. Expected to attend and complete all in and out of water mandatory trainings. Possession of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification is desired at the date of application and required prior to the date of hire. Must have reliable transportation. Ability to pass physical Swim Testing as mentioned above.
