Job description

Specter Aerospace is seeking an Aerospace Engineer I/II to support the design and analysis of high-speed airbreathing testbed vehicles. A successful candidate will have prior experience conducting numerical simulations of high-speed flight vehicles, supporting wind tunnel tests, and conducting detailed analyses of aerodynamic and aerothermal performance. 


About Specter Aerospace 

Specter Aerospace is building the next generation of hypersonic vehicles for U.S. Forces and Allies. Specter is headquartered just north of Boston in Peabody, MA where it leverages its advanced propulsion technologies, manufacturing, and testing capabilities to rapidly develop supersonic and hypersonic systems. Funded by a mix of government R&D organizations and private funding, Specter is expanding its team in preparation for flight testing and full-scale production.  



Role & Responsibilities 

  • Conduct aerodynamic and aerothermal numerical simulations of high-speed flight systems 
  • Utilize varying levels of fidelity to support model build up 
  • Support wind tunnel test preparation and execution 
  • Coordinate with design team to provide feedback on system design 
  • Support trajectory optimization and analysis efforts (3DOF/6DOF) 
  • Other duties as assigned by the company 



Job Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related discipline 
  • 0-3 years of relevant full-time experience 
  • Interest in/Experience conducting high-speed numerical simulations of aerospace vehicles 
  • Interest in/Experience using any of the following CFD tools: FUN3D, US3D, Cart3D, CFD++, OVERFLOW, Vulcan 
  • Interest in/Experience using grid preparation software (Pointwise, GridPro) 
  • Interest in/Experience using scripting languages (Python, BASH, MATLAB) to aid in analysis 
  • Interest in/Experience conducting wind tunnel tests at academic, government, and private wind tunnels 
  • Interest in/Experience using low fidelity methods for aerodynamic estimation 
  • Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required) 



Desired Skills 

  • Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline 
  • 2+ years of relevant full-time experience 
  • Experience developing high fidelity aerodynamic models for use in 6DOF simulations 
  • Experience leading/conducting aerodynamic wind tunnel campaigns 
  • Experience conducting aerothermal analyses to inform material selection/survivability 
  • Active DoD security clearance
