About Us

Guesthouse is part coworking space, part bed-and-breakfast, occasional adventure guide, and 100% yours. We build experiences, not places, and those experiences can happen almost anywhere. Whether it’s a remote home in the Sierras, a charming villa in wine country, or a converted industrial space on the waterfront, our focus is on creating an experience that inspires presence.

Our Vision

We create experiences that encourage new ideas, deeper meaning, and a state of mind that drives relationships, business, and culture forward.

The Role

The Assistant Cook supports the House Chef in delivering an exceptional culinary experience for Guesthouse guests. Based in Truckee, California, this part-time role is responsible for cleaning up after the previous evening’s dinner service when applicable, preparing and setting up breakfast for guests, and assisting with lunch preparation and service. The Assistant Cook serves as the primary kitchen presence when the House Chef is off-site, ensuring the kitchen remains clean, organized, and guest-ready at all times. This individual will collaborate closely with the House Chef and House Manager to maintain the high standards of the Guesthouse culinary program.

What You Will Do

  • Service: Prepare and present inspiring, seasonal breakfast and lunch offerings for guests. Follow the Guesthouse Program Guide to deliver superlative service at every touchpoint.

  • Kitchen Operations: Clean up from the previous night’s dinner service when applicable, ensuring the kitchen is spotless and ready for the next meal period.

  • Breakfast: Set up and execute a warm welcome breakfast for guests, including hot and cold items, beverages, and table presentation.

  • Lunch: Assist with preparation, setup, and service of lunch for guests, following menus and guidance from the House Chef.

  • Independent Coverage: Serve as the on-site kitchen lead when the House Chef is not present, handling guest food requests and maintaining kitchen standards.

  • Inventory & Prep: Assist with ingredient prep, stocking, and light inventory management to keep the kitchen running smoothly.

  • Cleanliness & Sanitation: Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment in compliance with all local and state health regulations.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the House Chef, House Manager, and Hub team to ensure seamless service and guest satisfaction.

  • Culture: Embody Guesthouse’s “good from the ground up,” “family style” approach to food and hospitality. Lead with empathy, kindness, and by example.

Additional responsibilities not detailed in this job description may be added as the scope of this position changes.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in a professional kitchen, catering operation, or hospitality food service environment.

  • Comfortable preparing breakfast and lunch items independently, including basic cooking techniques, plating, and presentation.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks during meal service.

  • A genuine passion for hospitality and creating memorable guest experiences.

  • Team-oriented with excellent communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude.

  • Flexibility to work mornings and varying schedules based on guest bookings, including weekends and holidays as needed.

  • Proficient in basic kitchen equipment operation and food safety practices.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment when the House Chef is off-site.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described are typical of what an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be provided as needed to help fulfill these functions.

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and working in a kitchen environment.

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

  • Ability to work in varying temperatures, including near ovens, stoves, and refrigeration units.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly rate: $18 – $24/hour, with opportunity for equity in a rapidly growing VC-backed hospitality startup through share options.

  • Robust medical, dental, vision, and 401k.

  • Opportunity to work alongside an experienced House Chef and grow your culinary skills.

  • Growth opportunities that come from working at a fast-paced, VC-backed technology business.

  • Opportunity to work in amazing locations.
