What is a hospital social worker?

Hospital social workers are professionals who support patients and their families in navigating the emotional, social, and financial challenges that can arise during medical treatment. They help coordinate care, connect patients with community resources, assist with discharge planning, and provide counseling or crisis intervention when needed. Hospital social workers play a crucial role in ensuring that patients receive holistic care that addresses both their medical and psychosocial needs.

How does a hospital social worker typically collaborate with medical staff to support patients and their families?

Hospital social workers work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive comprehensive care. They participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, provide input on psychosocial issues, and help develop discharge plans that address both medical and social needs. Effective communication and advocacy are key, as social workers often bridge gaps between patients, families, and healthcare providers to coordinate resources and emotional support. This collaborative approach helps improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
