Description
This is routine and repetitive work in the retrieval, distribution and processing of mail, packages, records, or materials within and between the Judicial Branch facilities and other public and private entities using various modes of transportation (foot, automobile, or public transportation). Work involves routine vehicle operation and minor clerical work.
A messenger typically works in a large complex, delivering records, mail, supplies, or books. Delivery requests are usually in the form of verbal instructions as to the organizational unit or person to whom delivery is to be made. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor who reviews work.
Duties and Responsibilities
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
  • Makes rounds of mail stations in assigned areas; picks up mail packages and records for delivery; stamps and seals mail; and deposits these to designated areas and/or runs errands as directed.
  • Operates and maintains postal meter.
  • Plans the most efficient and expedient delivery route from place to place; organizes deliveries accordingly.
  • Tracks and maintains a log of mail, obtaining required signatures and/or payments at time of delivery and for reconciliation purposes.
  • Processes outgoing mail.
  • Safely operates passenger vehicle in making deliveries to and receiving from other court offices and or entities. Maintains vehicle in a safe and clean condition.
  • Performs or schedules standard maintenance on vehicles including checking daily for gasoline, oil, battery, tires, and general running conditions, notifying immediate supervisor of any areas of concern.
  • Unloads items from large trucks and loads them onto smaller vehicles for delivery.
  • Responsible for transporting court personnel at times.
  • May perform office, clerical, and other related duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications
A high school diploma and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the operation of a passenger car, van or light pick-up truck in a commercial or business setting.

    • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, stayed organized, and show initiative.
    • Maintain the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times, ensuring that sensitive information remains secure and protected.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
