How much do horticultural engineer jobs pay per year?
What is a horticultural engineer?
A Horticultural Engineer applies engineering principles to the cultivation, production, and management of plants, gardens, and landscapes. They work on designing efficient irrigation systems, improving soil quality, and developing sustainable agricultural practices. Their job may also involve constructing greenhouses, innovating plant growth technologies, and ensuring environmental sustainability. Horticultural Engineers often collaborate with scientists, landscapers, and farmers to enhance plant production while minimizing resource use.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a horticultural engineer?
As a Horticultural Engineer, your daily tasks often include designing and overseeing irrigation systems, conducting site assessments, collaborating with landscape architects, and evaluating plant growth conditions. You may create technical drawings, select appropriate plant species, and implement environmentally sustainable solutions. Regular site visits, meetings with clients or project teams, and ensuring regulatory compliance are also common. Balancing hands-on fieldwork with technical planning and coordination is key to success in this role.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the horticultural engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Horticultural Engineer, you need a strong background in plant sciences, environmental engineering, soil and water management, and typically a bachelor's degree in horticultural engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, irrigation design tools, and industry-specific certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are often required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills set top professionals apart in this field. These competencies are essential for designing sustainable horticultural systems, collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and addressing complex agricultural challenges.

About University of Florida
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
