Job description

Job Summary

The San Mateo County Event Center is a public assembly facility that hosts a wide variety of events and produces the San Mateo County Fair, and operates the Jockey Club, a satellite wagering facility for horse racing as well as a full-service food service operation. The cashier is responsible for operating the POS/Cash register in multiple locations to ensure an accurate and smooth flow of customer traffic. This is an as-needed position for specific events, and the position will not have a regular or set schedule.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Greets guests in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Provide information about the food and beverage offerings and take patron orders.
  • Ensure that patron needs are met promptly and resolve any issues or concerns with a positive and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of products/menus and can answer specific questions, including describing the products/menus.
  • Promote and up-sell products/menus to increase sales revenue.
  • Inputs orders into a register at the point of sale and creates a receipt for a credit card transaction.
  • Accurately process credit and debit card transactions.
  • Verifies the validity of charges and receives card payments from guests.
  • Coordinates food orders, ensuring hot food is quickly and accurately delivered from the cook to the customer.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the concession area, including countertops, food displays, and utensils.
  • Restock food and beverage supplies as needed, ensuring proper storage and handling procedures are followed.
  • Maintain a clean, hygienic, and organized work environment, including cleaning tables, counters, and floors as needed.
  • Follow health and safety regulations to ensure a safe environment for customers and staff.
  • Collaborate with other team members and management to ensure smooth operations and provide support during busy times.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Must have experience handling credit card transactions
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with management, co-workers, clients and customers using principles of good customer service.
    Possess a positive attitude, work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Requires being responsible, reliable and dependable to fulfill job obligations.
  • Work long and irregular hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.


Minimum Requirements

  • Any combination of education, experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the responsibilities of this position. One year of cashier experience. High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Food Handlers certification within 30 days of employment.

Vision requirements are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Work may be conducted outdoors, and employees may be exposed to various weather-related conditions.
