As of Sep 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for home infusion nurse in the United States is $41.25, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $35.58 and $47.12 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a home infusion nurse?

A Home Infusion Nurse is a registered nurse (RN) who administers medications, fluids, and nutrients to patients in their homes through intravenous (IV) therapy. They work with physicians and pharmacists to ensure patients receive proper treatment while monitoring for side effects or complications. Home Infusion Nurses also educate patients and caregivers on IV care and medication management. Their role allows patients to receive critical treatments at home, improving comfort and reducing hospital visits.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by home infusion nurses compared to hospital-based nurses?

Home Infusion Nurses often work independently in patients’ homes, which means they must be highly self-sufficient and adapt to varying home environments that may lack the resources of a hospital. They frequently manage complex infusions, troubleshoot equipment issues, and educate patients and caregivers on administering treatments. Communication with physicians and pharmacists is typically done remotely, requiring detailed documentation and proactive follow-up. This autonomy provides variety and independence but also requires strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Those who thrive in this role enjoy making a direct impact on patient outcomes while building close, supportive patient relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home infusion nurse, and why are they important?

Home Infusion Nurses require strong clinical assessment skills, IV therapy expertise, and a valid RN license, often with additional certification in infusion nursing such as CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion). Proficiency with infusion pumps, electronic charting systems, and safe handling of medications is essential. Compassion, independence, and excellent communication skills help nurses excel in home settings where they work one-on-one with patients and coordinate with remote healthcare teams. These skills ensure safe, effective care delivery and foster trust with patients and families in a home environment.

Do home infusion nurses get paid more?

Home infusion nurses typically earn higher wages compared to general nursing roles due to specialized skills, training, and the requirement to work independently in patients' homes. Compensation can also vary based on experience, certifications, and geographic location, with some regions offering higher pay for home infusion services. Overall, their pay often reflects the complexity and responsibility of administering infusions in a home setting.

What does a home infusion nurse do?

A home infusion nurse administers medications, such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, or pain management drugs, directly to patients in their homes. They assess patient needs, monitor for adverse reactions, and provide education on medication use and infusion equipment, often working independently and following strict safety protocols. Certification in infusion therapy and good clinical skills are essential for this role.
