What is a home based veterinarian?

Home based veterinarians are licensed veterinary professionals who provide medical care for animals in clients' homes rather than at a traditional clinic. This service can include routine check-ups, vaccinations, minor treatments, and end-of-life care. Home visits are especially helpful for pets that experience stress when traveling or for owners with mobility challenges. These veterinarians bring portable equipment and supplies, ensuring pets receive quality care in a comfortable and familiar environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home based veterinarian?

To thrive as a Home-Based Veterinarian, you need a veterinary medicine degree, state licensure, and strong diagnostic and clinical skills tailored to various animal species. Familiarity with portable diagnostic equipment, telemedicine platforms, and electronic medical records is typically required. Exceptional communication, empathy, and time management help build trust with clients and efficiently manage house-call appointments. These skills ensure high-quality, personalized care in diverse home environments while fostering strong client relationships and professional credibility.

What are some common challenges faced by home based veterinarians, and how can they be managed?

Home-based veterinarians often encounter challenges such as limited access to specialized equipment, maintaining work-life balance, and managing client expectations in a non-clinical setting. To address these, it's important to invest in portable diagnostic tools, establish clear communication with clients about the scope of services, and set firm work hours to prevent burnout. Networking with local clinics for referrals and emergencies can also help ensure comprehensive care for patients while supporting your own professional boundaries.

PAWS Veterinary Center is growing — and we’re excited to welcome two experienced Veterinary Technicians to our exceptional team! With the addition of new veterinarians and a recent practice expansion, this is an incredible opportunity to join a technician-forward, collaborative, and genuinely supportive hospital where your skills are valued and your voice matters.

Well-established, privately-owned practice with a strong reputation in the Tucson community

At PAWS, we believe great medicine starts with a strong, supported team.

What You’ll Do

As a Veterinary Technician at PAWS, you’ll practice at the top of your license and skillset, including:

What We’re Looking For

  • Experienced Veterinary Technicians (certified or experienced non-certified techs encouraged to apply)
  • Strong anesthesia and patient monitoring skills
  • Team-oriented, positive attitude
  • Excellent communication and attention to detail
  • Top-notch written and verbal communication skills - our techs serve as the primary process owners of medical records, and maintain clear, thorough documentation using our ezyVet cloud-based software to the fullest. We've got templates, shortcuts, and leverage our integrated Co-Vet AI Scribe to summarize complex consultations and treatment plans accurately
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, high-quality medical environment
  • Interest in learning integrative veterinary modalities is a plus (laser, rehab support, holistic approaches)

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Full-time, stable schedule
  • Comprehensive employee benefits - medical, vision, and dental insurance, PTO, CE allowance, uniform allowance, free Employee Assistance Program, generous pet care discounts, and other perks designed to support both your professional and personal well-being
  • Supportive leadership that listens
  • Ongoing learning and growth opportunities
  • A workplace where you are respected, trusted, and appreciated

Our Facilities & Approach to Care

PAWS Veterinary Center operates out of two large, free-standing facilities located at 300 and 360 E River Rd in Tucson, AZ, designed with both patients and team members in mind. Our award-winning facility design supports efficient workflows, low-stress patient movement, and a calm, comfortable environment for pets, clients, and staff.

We are proud to host a team of Fear Free Certified professionals, and our team is deeply committed to:

  • Low-Stress and Fear-Free handling techniques
  • Thoughtful patient flow and calm exam environments (like our new, dedicated cat-only wing!)
  • Individualized care that prioritizes patient comfort and emotional well-being
  • A culture that values compassion, patience, and doing things the right way — even when it takes a little extra time

Ready to Join the PAWS Family?

If you’re looking for more than “just another clinic” — if you want to be part of a team that truly works together and practices thoughtful, progressive medicine — we’d love to meet you.
