Job description

Recognized as the No. 1 site trusted by real estate professionals, Realtor.com® has been at the forefront of online real estate for over 25 years, connecting buyers, sellers, and renters with trusted insights and expert guidance to find their perfect home. Through its robust suite of tools, Realtor.com® not only makes a significant impact on the real estate industry at large, but for consumers, navigating the biggest purchase they will make in their life, by providing a user experience that is easy to use, easy to understand, and most of all, easy to make decisions.
Join us on our mission to empower more people to find their way home by breaking barriers to entry, making the right connections, and building confidence through expert guidance.
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our infrastructure organization. At Realtor.com®, we are deeply committed to building a "Paved Path" for our engineers. This is a high-impact opportunity to treat our internal developer experience as a product, building the tools, third-party integrations, and automation that allow our engineering teams to ship faster, cost-effectively, and securely on AWS.
This Software Engineer role sits squarely within the Cloud Governance team. Your mission is to embed compliance, security, and financial visibility into automated, self-service developer workflows-making the right, governance-compliant path the easiest path to take. You will manage your own commitments, flag blockers proactively, and adopt a RealOwnership mindset as you build and scale our Internal Developer Portal (IDP) based on the Backstage platform.
We believe in leveraging the best tools to solve problems faster. You will be expected to utilize AI coding assistants and LLMs (such as Copilot or Windsurf) proficiently to accelerate development velocity, efficiently generate boilerplate for new plugins, and troubleshoot complex debugging scenarios. This role requires the judgment to verify AI-generated outputs for security and performance, ensuring high-quality delivery.
What you'll do:
Backstage Core & Plugin Development

  • Portal Evolution: Build and maintain our Backstage instance, working across the full stack from React-based frontend components to high-performance Node.js microservices on the backend.
  • Third-Party Integrations: Design, develop, and maintain custom plugins to integrate tooling (Finout, ServiceNow, CircleCI, monitoring suites, and security tools) into a single pane of glass.
  • Software Scaffolding: Create automated "Software Templates" that allow developers to spin up production-ready, pre-governed AWS environments directly from the portal.
Cloud Governance & Observability Automation
  • Governance Scripting: Write clean Python and Node.js automation scripts to enforce cloud compliance, IAM best practices, and resource lifecycle rules behind the scenes.
  • Operational Visibility: Integrate AWS CloudWatch metrics, audit data, and cost frameworks into Backstage entity pages to give development teams real-time visibility into their service health and cloud spend.
  • Least-Privilege Security: Ensure all automated portal actions and provisioned resources strictly adhere to corporate IAM, CloudTrail, and auditing standards.
What you'll bring:
Experience & Expertise
  • 2-4 years of professional software development experience with a solid foundational understanding of both frontend and backend systems.
  • Hands-on experience building clean, interactive web user interfaces using React, paired with strong proficiency in Node.js and Python for building APIs, microservices, and infrastructure automation.
  • Working knowledge of core AWS services, including compute/orchestration (Amazon EKS, Lambda) and storage/security (S3, IAM policies, roles, and security boundaries).
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or CloudFormation templates to provision cloud architecture.
  • Preferred: Experience with Backstage, NestJS, REST/GraphQL, and basic CI/CD pipeline integration (GitHub Actions, CircleCI).
Technical Skills
  • Framework & Frontend: Backstage (Software Catalog & Developer Platform), React.
  • Languages & Backend: JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Node.js, NestJS, REST/GraphQL.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS (EKS, Lambda, S3, IAM), Terraform, CloudFormation.
  • Governance & Monitoring: AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail.
  • Tools & CI/CD: AI Coding Assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf), GitHub Actions, CircleCI.
Professional Qualities
  • Clear Communication: Ability to communicate tasks, technical challenges, and blockers clearly within a squad framework.
  • Squad-Level Collaboration: Active contributor to team collaboration, receptive to feedback, and comfortable iterating quickly to support fellow engineers.
  • Iterative Mindset: Excited by the "Build, Reconstruct, Build Better" value, with the ability to fail fast and continuously improve code and processes.
  • Customer-Centric Execution: Empathy for the developer experience, focusing execution on making compliance intuitive and friction-free for end users.
