Home Based Ftth Design Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Home Based FTTH Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Home Based FTTH Design Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications engineering, fiber optic network design, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, GIS systems, and knowledge of industry standards (e.g., ITU-T, ANSI) are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help you manage projects independently and collaborate with distributed teams. These competencies ensure the delivery of accurate, scalable fiber network designs that support reliable broadband connectivity.

What are some common challenges faced by home-based FTTH Design Engineers, and how can they be overcome?

Home-based FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Design Engineers often face challenges such as effectively collaborating with remote teams, managing complex project data, and keeping up with evolving industry standards. To overcome these, engineers typically leverage digital collaboration tools, maintain clear communication with project managers and field teams, and participate in ongoing training or webinars. Staying organized and proactively seeking feedback also helps ensure designs meet both client specifications and regulatory requirements.

What does a Home Based FTTH Design Engineer do?

A Home Based FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Design Engineer is responsible for planning and designing fiber optic networks that deliver high-speed internet directly to residences. Their work includes creating detailed network layouts, preparing technical diagrams, selecting materials, and ensuring that designs comply with industry standards and local regulations. Working from home, they often use specialized software to model network routes and collaborate with field teams and project managers remotely. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure.

What is the difference between Home Based Ftth Design Engineer vs Fiber Network Planner?

AspectHome Based Ftth Design EngineerFiber Network Planner
CertificationsFTTH design certifications, telecom/network certificationsNetwork planning certifications, telecom certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote/home office, field sites for surveysOffice-based, field surveys, planning meetings
Industry UsageTelecom providers, fiber optic installation companiesTelecom companies, network infrastructure firms

The Home Based Ftth Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing fiber-to-the-home networks remotely, utilizing specialized software and client data. In contrast, the Fiber Network Planner is involved in broader network planning, including capacity and route analysis, often requiring on-site surveys. Both roles require similar certifications and work within the telecom industry, but their daily tasks and work environments differ, with the former being more remote and design-focused, and the latter emphasizing planning and coordination.

Job description

Design Engineer – Modular

The Design Engineer plays a critical role in transforming virtual design concepts into fully engineered, constructable solutions. This position leads preconstruction design, engineering analysis, and BIM coordination while ensuring accuracy, constructability, and code compliance across projects.

As part of Gaylor Electric’s Production Innovation Center, this role also supports the design and continuous improvement of modular electric room skid solutions—bridging engineering, manufacturing, and field operations. The Design Engineer drives fabrication-ready design, collaborates with production teams, and integrates real-world feedback into scalable, repeatable solutions.

A successful candidate brings strong technical expertise, a proactive mindset, and the ability to lead design efforts while collaborating across disciplines in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design, Engineering & Documentation

  • Lead projects through preconstruction design, engineering, and coordination phases
  • Develop and review design, coordination, and installation drawings aligned with Gaylor Electric Best Practices
  • Produce fabrication-ready documentation, including layouts, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment placement, and system details
  • Perform and evaluate electrical calculations (load, voltage drop, short circuit, lighting, etc.)
  • Ensure all designs are constructable, code-compliant, and aligned with project specifications
  • Interpret and develop drawings for power, lighting, systems, underground, site, and temporary power

BIM, Modeling & Coordination

  • Develop and manage 3D models using Revit and BIM tools
  • Lead and participate in BIM coordination meetings with architects, engineers, and trade partners
  • Identify and resolve spatial, constructability, and installation challenges through 3D coordination
  • Review BIM Execution Plans, specifications, and jurisdictional requirements for compliance

Production & Manufacturing Integration

  • Support the design and development of modular electric room skid solutions
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to clarify design intent and resolve drawing-related questions in real time
  • Provide timely updates and revisions to support efficient production workflows
  • Participate in design reviews with engineering, project management, and production teams
  • Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, and field installation

Continuous Improvement & Standardization

  • Collect and incorporate feedback from production and field teams to improve design efficiency and constructability
  • Drive continuous improvement of skid designs through lessons learned and design optimization
  • Support development of standardized templates, component libraries, and repeatable configurations
  • Implement and refine best practices to improve quality, consistency, and cycle time

Project & Stakeholder Support

  • Provide design and BIM support to operations, project management, estimating, and field teams
  • Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure equipment and design alignment
  • Interface with clients, consultants, and partners to resolve technical challenges
  • Communicate design changes clearly and proactively across all stakeholders

Leadership & Development

  • Mentor and support Virtual Design team members
  • Contribute to the development of innovative workflows and design best practices
  • Maintain and expand technical knowledge of electrical systems, codes, and construction methods
  • Ensure quality and productivity of deliverables within required timelines
