Job Title: Construction Science Specialist โ€“ Residential Buildings

Location: Kansas City, MO

Norton and Schmidt is a structural engineering firm specializing in residential and light commercial projects. We work closely with architects, builders, and developers to deliver safe, efficient, and code-compliant designs. We are seeking a Construction Science professional with residential building experience to help bridge the gap between design and construction in the field.

Position Overview

The Construction Science Specialist will support our engineering team by applying practical residential construction knowledge to design, detailing, and construction administration. This role is ideal for someone who understands how homes are actually built and wants to apply that experience in a professional engineering office environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review existing buildings and residences to gather information for repairs and remodels
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings for constructability and consistency with field conditions
  • Assist with preparation of construction documents: details, schedules, notes, and specifications related to residential construction
  • Perform site visits to observe construction, document existing conditions, and assist with field verification and punch lists
  • Support engineers in responding to RFIs, submittals, and contractor questions during construction
  • Assist with investigations of construction issues (e.g., cracking, water intrusion, framing discrepancies) and help develop repair recommendations
  • Conduct quantity takeoffs and assist with cost impacts related to design changes
  • Help ensure designs align with applicable residential building codes (IRC/IBC), local amendments, and industry standards
  • Maintain organized project documentation and assist with report preparation

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Construction Science, Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field
  • 1โ€“3 years of experience in residential construction (builder, superintendent, inspector, or similar role)
  • Strong understanding of wood-framed residential construction, including foundations, framing, sheathing, roofing, and interior/exterior finishes
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings and specifications
  • Familiarity with residential building codes and inspection processes
  • Proficiency in MS Office; experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD/Revit, or similar software is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation, and quality control
  • Effective communication skills for working with engineers, architects, contractors, and clients
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience working with or for an engineering or architecture firm
  • Exposure to structural concepts (load paths, lateral systems, foundation types)
  • Experience in construction administration or inspections
